The Chicago Bears are at the heart of the NFL this week, and it’s because they’re one of the most anticipated teams to watch this season. The Chicago Bears had a fantastic preseason, and now, the excitement is strong for their 2025-26 run, all thanks to new head coach Ben Johnson, who has been putting a lot of hard work into this team.
As the new season approaches, a lot of eyes are on not just Williams but also quarterback Caleb Williams. There are high expectations for what Johnson can do to make Williams a better player, and the two have already been working together closely and showing some progress. So, when the Chicago Bears have their home opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday, September 8, at Soldier Field, it will be a new and improved Williams on the field.
But, all of the positive energy isn’t stopping some people from criticizing Williams and the Bears. One new report makes some brutal claims about the signal-caller, and the timing of this report, just before the season opener, is curious.
New Report on Caleb Williams Comes Right Before Chicago Bears Opener
Williams had a rough rookie year, and now, a report from Tyler Dunne of Go Long published on Friday, September 5, looks at that Chicago Bears rookie season and gives some reasons why he says it was so messy. According to the report, Dunne spoke with 32 “coaches, scouts, execs, players and staffers inside Halas Hall” last season. But, here’s the kicker. They’re all anonymous sources.
In his report, he says the various Bears sources, unnamed, had some specific criticisms and observations about Williams. But, as Gene Chamberlain from SI points out in a feature published on Friday, September 5, it’s difficult to believe such accusations from anonymous sources.
“Dunne’s series, available through subscription, details some problems that went on in Williams’ rookie year,” Chamberlain stated. “At least they seem like details but it’s hard to say because no source is given in many cases.”
“When a play call was sent in, he’d stare at this wristband for a painful length of time. Like it was another language,” Dunne stated that an unnamed source told him. Elsewhere, Dunne added, “Williams verbalized the call in the huddle, it was wrong half the time, and then players would be lined up wrong all over the field.”
I won’t go through all of the specific claims that were made in this report about Williams, because none of these are proven, and it’s icky to report details that have no proof or evidence. As Chamberlain smartly states, “Without a source’s name put to it, though, we are only left to accept what is essentially commentary by the writer as truth. Not good enough.”
Fishy Timing of Report on Chicago Bears Quarterback Caleb Williams
NFL content creator Max Markham noted in a post on X, “Any coincidence that a Packer fan and former Packers journalist is dropping all of this days before the Bears first game? He clearly embellished any little thing he heard.”
As for the reality of the Bears’ situation, Johnson praised Williams during a conference on Wednesday, September 3. “We’re going to grow together,” Johnson said during the conference. “This offense is going to grow together with him, and you know, there’ll some bumpy steps along the way. But that’s OK. That’s the nature of doing it. I feel really good about where he’s at right now. There’s no reason why we can’t win this year.”
Let’s hope Williams can block out the noise of this report and focus on the task at hand. It’s great to see Johnson’s trust in him. Reach out to me with your thoughts.
