Bryson DeChambeau: This Scottie Scheffler Skill Puts Him on Tiger Woods’ Level

Bryson DeChambeau thinks he’s better than Scottie Scheffler — at least when it comes to a skill or two. But the LIV star admits the one thing the world No. 1 does best is what separates him from the rest of professional golf.

There’s an argument to be made that DeChambeau and Scheffler have been the most successful golfers in the sports over the last three or four years. Surely, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele warrant discussion, but DeChambeau — the 2024 U.S. Open champion — and Scheffler — winner of two of the last three majors — might be the most feared players in the game right now.

They’re fun to compare, too. DeChambeau hasn’t stepped foot on a golf course he didn’t think he could overpower. Everything is a math problem with him, too, and when everything is in his favor, there’s not really a course on the planet he can’t bring to its knees.

How Scottie Scheffler Has Lifted and Separated From Rest of Pro Golf

Scheffler’s superpower might be his consistency with a mindset that is second to none. He’s as steady as they come with an elite set of skills. And as DeChambeau noted on a recent episode of “The Pat McAfee Show,” DeChambeau explained how Scheffler has been able to separate from the pack.

“He’s got the best spin and distance control I’ve ever seen,” DeChambeau said on the show. “He controls the ball from a spin perspective so much better than anybody else. If you’re 175 yards out, and it’s 10 miles into the wind, he knows how to control the flight and spin to get that ball to land right next to the hole every time. His distance control is the best since Tiger (Woods) probably.”

Certainly, the Woods comparisons have increased in the last year or so. Scheffler’s run of dominance, having won three majors since the start of 2024, is Tiger-esque. But it’s not just that Scheffler has won at the rate he has, but it’s also how he does it. When Scheffler is playing his best and winning, it’s like no one can even come close to hanging with him.

Is Bryson Gaining On Scheffler?

At a time when everyone can hit it a mile, Scheffler might have found the one skill that makes the difference.

“It’s impressive to see what he’s done, and we’re all aspiring to do that,” DeChambeau added. “That’s something I’ve gotta get better at it. I can it hit farther than him, can probably it hit straighter than him, I can make just as many putts as him, but really it’s about my iron play right now and my wedges to get a little more consistent.”

DeChambeau might be getting close. He was one of the only players on Scheffler’s level during The Open Championship at Royal Portrush … over the final three days of the tournament. DeChambeau’s disastrous opening-round 78 cost him a shot at the Claret Jug; he went 16-under over the final three rounds of the tournament and finished in 10th place.

“I played well on the back end of it, but man, if I just played better the first day, I would have had a chance to be up there with Scottie. It’s impressive to see how he can every week — no matter where he’s at, no matter the conditions — he can control his distance so well.”
