Emeka Egbuka is not behaving nicely toward Baker Mayfield’s passes, according to the veteran quarterback.
Mayfield jokingly quipped about the rookie receiver “disrespecting” Mayfield’s throws after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rallied for a 29-27 win over the New York Jets on Sunday.
The rookie wideout, who the Bucs chose in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft in April. had his best game as a professional by reeling in six catches for 85 yards.
That performance included a key 28-yard reception on Tampa Bay’s seven-play, 48-yard drive that set up Chase McLaughlin’s walk-off, 38-yard field goal that kept Tampa Bay unbeaten in its three games. But it also included a ridiculous one-handed grab in front of the Buccaneers bench.
What Did Baker Mayfield Say About Emeka Egbuka ‘disrespecting throws?’
Mayfield was asked which of Egbuka’s important catches he was more impressed by.
“One-hand catch,” Mayfield said. “He’s disrespecting my passes with that one hand. Rookies.”
Ironically, Egbuka almost had another one-handed catch on the Bucs’ final drive, but it was called incomplete by the officials and was not reviewed — since it appeared he only got one foot inbounds.
“He had a couple of great catches, including the one that was called incomplete but was an absolute catch as it was shown on the video board,” Mayfield said. “I’m really surprised the video assist did not step in and call it a catch considering it was there.”
Though the one-handed catch made waves — and impressed people online — his hauling in an over-the-shoulder grab on Tampa Bay’s final drive was more important. Mayfield drove in a throw over Jets safety Andre Cisco in front of the Jets sideline that Egbuka leapt to haul in and set up the Bucs in field-goal range.
It was Mayfield’s third game-winning drive this season and his second in a row where the Bucs took the lead with less than 10 seconds on the clock — the Bucs took the lead with six seconds left in their 20-19 win over the Houston Texans in Week 2.
“Resilient group,” Mayfield said. “We support each other no matter what. It’s a resilient, mentally tough group.”
The Jets took the lead on a blocked field goal with 1:49 left in regulation. Despite the bad fortune, Mayfield was calm.
“We had plenty of time, yeah,” Mayfield said.
What Did Baker Mayfield Say About Taking Dance Lessons?
Mayfield finished second on the Buccaneers with 44 rushing yards Sunday, continuing the trend where the ultra-athletic quarterback has added the running element to his game.
Mayfield has the second-most rushing yards for Tampa Bay season, behind only Bucky Irving. He is averaging 9.7 yards per rush on 12 attempts, the eighth-best mark in the NFL and the third-best average of any ball carrier with at least eight carries — plus he has a long of 33 yards.
He was asked about whether he has been taking dance lessons to improve his footwork.
“Your feet move like ‘cha-cha-cha;’ are you taking like dancing lessons?” a reporter asked.
“I don’t think I have time for dancing lessons,” Mayfield said. “But I appreciate the cha-cha-cha. Good stuff.”
