Buccaneers Steal Rookie Safety from Steelers Practice Squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers are riding high right now. After taking down the Minnesota Vikings in Dublin, Ireland, in Week 4, the team has embarked on its bye week, giving it some time to rest and recover before finishing out the season with 13 straight games. On Tuesday, though, the team was dealt a tough update regarding one of their rookies.

Up and down their roster, the Steelers are full of talent, which led to them stashing several players on their practice squad ahead of the start of the new season. One of those players was rookie safety Sebastian Castro, but he is no longer with the team after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made an interesting move ahead of Week 5.

Buccaneers Sign Sebastian Castro to Their Active Roster

Castro didn’t hear his name called during the 2025 NFL Draft, but he ended up latching on with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent. Castro impressed the team throughout the summer, and while he ultimately didn’t find his way onto the active roster, he did return to the team as a member of their practice squad.

Since then, Castro has been biding his time, waiting for an opportunity to arise. Pittsburgh has a very deep secondary that has largely managed to remain healthy so far this season, though, so there hasn’t been an opportunity for Castro to get elevated to the active roster and make his NFL debut just yet.

That is likely going to change soon: the only difference is that his NFL debut will not be getting made with the Steelers. After losing several key defenders in their Week 4 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Bucs needed some help in their secondary, which led to them poaching Castro from Pittsburgh by signing him to their active roster.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost for the first time in 2025 in Week 4 … and they also lost a handful of defensive players to injury during the contest,” Scott Smith wrote on the team’s official website. “At least one, safety Rashad Wisdom, is heading to injured reserve due to a quad injury sustained in the game. To fill the resulting roster spot and the new hole in their secondary, the Buccaneers signed rookie safety Sebastian Castro off the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ practice squad.

While Castro wasn’t playing a role for the Steelers currently, the coaching staff had been working hard on developing him behind the scenes, with the hope being that he could eventually become a key contributor for them down the line. Those hopes have now been dashed, as he could immediately make his NFL debut in Week 5 for the Bucs.

Pittsburgh will simply have to move forward without Castro, and the good news is that, with the team on its bye week, it will have time to find a proper replacement for him on its practice squad. When the Steelers do return to the field next week, they will begin preparing for a big divisional matchup against the Cleveland Browns in Week 6.
