It’s been a difficult campaign so far this season for the Calgary Flames, who have continually been treading water and have proven unable to find any kind of consistency, leading to their current position in the second-to-last place spot in the Pacific Division standings.
And things aren’t getting any easier for them in terms of injuries. The Flames have announced that defenseman Jake Bean, who hasn’t played since Calgary’s Dec. 6 win over the Utah Mammoth, will be undergoing surgery and will be unavailable for an undetermined period of time.
“I’m going to start with a quick update on Jake Bean, because I know it’s been a little while,” head coach Ryan Huska explained following their practice session on Thursday morning. “Jake is going to have surgery coming up here, and he is going to be out indefinitely for us.”
“He has been dealing with something for quite a while now, so unfortunately for him, this is the stage that it is at now, and he will be out indefinitely.”
When asked if Bean had potentially re-aggravated a previous injury, Huska responded that his ailment is something that’s been lingering for a “long period of time”.
“It’s not really re-aggravating; it’s something he’s been dealing with for a long period of time,” Huska said.
Huska then noted that despite Bean’s desire to play through the injury, his body didn’t respond to treatment and that surgery was the only option remaining.
“He sure did, but he just got to the point where it just wasn’t responding to much of anything, so this is the best path forward for him,” Huska answered when asked if Bean wanted to play through the ailment.
As far as whether or not Bean will be able to return to the ice this season, Huska said that’s not known at this point.
“Don’t know that answer for sure yet, but it is something longer-term,” he said.
Bean has been limited to 16 games this season and has a goal with an assist, along with a subpar minus-seven rating.

The Calgary Flames have experienced multiple injuries this season
Bean isn’t the only injury that the Flames have had to deal with this season.
Left winger Samuel Honzek recently had to undergo surgery and could miss the remainder of the campaign, while forward Martin Pospisil is currently unavailable with an injury of his own, but could potentially return near the end of the month.

The Flames could be on the verge of major changes
The struggles of the Flames this season have understandably led to multiple players being included in trade rumors, including the likes of defenseman Rasmus Andersson and forward Nazem Kadri.
Insider David Pagnotta noted recently that the likelihood of Kadri being moved if things don’t turn around in Calgary before long continues to rise.
“Kadri, 35, is in the fourth season of a seven-year, $49 million contract. He owns a full no-movement clause, which shifts to a 13-team no-trade list next season,” Pagnotta wrote.
“The native of London, Ontario, is no stranger to trade chatter, as his name has popped up each of the last two off-seasons and is starting to make the rounds again, primarily due to Calgary’s poor start.”
So far this season, Kadri has tallied seven goals with 22 assists.
