The Indianapolis Colts are in a disadvantageous situation when it comes to their quarterback room. Starting quarterback Daniel Jones has landed on the injured reserve after tearing his Achilles tendon in Week 14. His replacement, rookie Riley Leonard, strained his PCL in his NFL debut after Jones went down. The emergency quarterback, Anthony Richardson, is on the IR as well with a fractured orbital bone.
All this led the team fighting for first place in the AFC South to turn to retired 44-year-old quarterback Phillip Rivers.
This move served as a “slap in the face” to a certain “First Take” employee who never officially retired from the NFL, Cam Newton.
“It’s almost like a slap in my face, bro,” Newton said. “I did not, and will not (retire), because of an opportunity like this!”
If you ask head coach Shane Steichen, the team signed Rivers because he is familiar with the system. If you ask podcaster Cam Newton, the team signed Rivers because Newton himself is held to a different standard than other inactive quarterbacks.
He thinks the reason no team has reached out to him comes down to one simple factor.
“I know when it comes to me… It’s the personality, bro. Folks don’t want a Shedeur situation,” Newton said. “They don’t want a circus.”
“I know why the Indianapolis Colts didn’t sign me… Cus their newest member, Sauce Gardner, was wearing number one. Cam not coming cus he gotta get that number one.”
Cam Newton Says He Would Take A Workout With Indy
Before Newton began on his woe-is-me tour of explanations for why other teams have not reached out, the 36-year-old former quarterback stated that he would unquestionably accept a workout with the Indianapolis Colts.
The 6-foot-5 gunslinger has stayed in excellent shape since his last game action in 2021, posting daily Snapchat videos of his workouts.
Given all that has transpired, it is certainly worth considering if giving the keys to the former league MVP is a good idea.
With the NFL’s leading rusher in the backfield, having a mobile quarterback has opened a lot of rushing lanes for Jonathan Taylor.
I’m not here to make any assumptions, but based on what we’ve seen from Rivers in his 17 seasons prior to retirement, I am not expecting the future Hall of Famer to return to the game with a newfound affinity for scrambling.
While Newton’s delivery is not for everyone, he does present a solid thought starter.
