Cam Ward Extends TD Drought While an Unlikely Name Makes Unofficial Titans History

The Tennessee Titans senior writer/editor wasted no time posting his list of six things that stood out in the team’s preseason finale. Their 23-13 win over the Minnesota Vikings kept things on the right track heading into Week 1.

After a 23-20 win last week, Cam Ward made his third and final preseason start. Titans fans continue to share their excitement for Ward as it was an unlikely name who etched his name in history.

Jim Wyatt Breaks Down Cam Ward’s TD Drought Along with Joey Slye Drilling a 63 Yard Field Goal

Somehow, the team’s No. 1 overall pick failed to throw a touchdown pass in any of their first three games. There’s room for concern in that aspect, though he looked his best against the Vikings. His first NFL touchdown can wait as Wyatt highlighted him leading his team to a 13-play, 90 yard touchdown drive.

Wyatt included a quote from HC Brian Callahan, “[Cam] led a long drive, he was efficient, he was accurate… It was good to have that last experience.”

In total, Ward finished 3/4 for 36 yards. He tried to escape the pocket once, but only got one yard out of it. Other than that, he was sacked on one occasion.

“I know what I am capable of doing on the football field,” Ward said. “Coach Callahan knows that, so I am excited. He is going to put the ball in my hands, and I’m glad he’s doing it.”

Elsewhere, Joey Slye made unofficial history with the team. Since this was a preseason game, his 63 yard field goal won’t officially count in the record books. Regardless, it was three yards longer than Rob Bironas, who set the record back in 2006 with a 60-yarder.

“That was an impressive kick, and I think it hit the net, too,” Callahan said. “That’s a weapon. If we can get points on those ranges, that’s huge deal for us from a points perspective.”

Titans Head Into Week 1 With Back-to-Back Wins

On a night where plenty of players were fighting for a roster spot, Van Jefferson righted his wrong from last week. Brandon Allen gets credit for throwing a 65-yard TD, one that showcased the speed of the veteran receiver. Jefferson may have dropped Ward’s first TD pass last week, but he ended this game with three receptions for 102 yards.

Elic Ayomanor continues to head into the regular with a slight advantage over Chimere Dike. Both were selected in the 4th round this year as the Stanford graduated added another three catches for 25 yards. Ayomanor finishes the preseason with 72 yards on five receptions compared to Dike’s two catches for seven yards.

Mike Brown led the way on defense as five of his eight preseason tackles came against the Vikings. He’s currently listed as FS3 as LILB2 Cedric Gray finished with five as well. Gray’s preseason tackle total jumps to 10 as Brian Asamoah (RILB2) made his presence felt with four tackles.

A 2-1 preseason outing is quite impressive for a team who only won three regular season games last season. Whether they can use these wins to guide them to victory past September 7 in Denver remains to be seen.
