Canelo vs. Crawford Purse & Payout: How Much Money Will the Fighters Make?

When it comes to the purse and guaranteed money up for grab for the Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford fight on Sept 13, it’s hard to get a straight answer. That is, of course, other than some variation of “it’s a lot.”

The two boxing legends will square off on Netflix from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in a spectacle that could alter the landscape of boxing. Promoters, including Dana White, are keeping the cards close to the vest, but it sure sounds like there’s a significant gap between the two fighters.

According to various reports, Alvarez will make at least $100 million (perhaps up to $150 million) for the fight. Crawford, meanwhile, says he’s getting $10 million for the fight (a dubious claim).

Crawford Fight Part of Canelo’s Jaw-Dropping Deal

Alalshikh, who helped get the fight in place, made it clear at a press conference leading up to the fight that Alvarez’s reported $100 million payday for the fight is low.

“More than that,” he flatly stated at the presser.

White, meanwhile, in an interview with Vegas PBS confirmed the figure — more or less.

“Well, imagine what it would take to get Canelo to fight Crawford to go up weight classes when he’s undefeated,” White said.

When pressed about the $100 million figure, White gave a one-word answer.

“Probably,” he said with a laugh.

When asked about Crawford’s cut of the deal, White deferred.

“I don’t know. I don’t actually even know,” he said. “That deal was cut with (Alalshikh) in Saudi Arabia.

Crawford’s Cut Pales in Comparison to Canelo

Details about Crawford’s take-home pay have been even more difficult to uncover. He’s in an interesting position for this fight, too. Crawford is actually going up two weight classes to fight at 168 pounds while putting his undefeated record on the line against a world champion who is far more comfortable in that class.

Certainly, promoters would have to cut a massive check to get Crawford on board, right? Maybe not — at least not relatively speaking. Crawford revealed on the “Ring Champs” podcast back in June that he’s getting $10 million for the fight, although not everyone believes that.

“I got $10 million for that fight,” Crawford said of the Canelo date. One of the podcast cohost replied, calling it a lie, and Crawford insisted the opportunity is bigger than money.

“How you know that’s a lie? … I’m doing it for the opportunity, the legacy. The legacy outweighs the money. Three-time undisputed, oohwee, coming soon.”

There’s plenty of speculation the number could actually be closer to $50 million, but those reports are unconfirmed.

There was a time when it was much easier to get these figures. However, in recent years, states — including Nevada where the Sept. 13 fight will take place — have stopped releasing purse figures to the public.

Regardless, the Sept. 13 card has the potential to be a major win for White, TKO and everyone else involved outside the ring. White continues to insist that the gate for Canelo vs. Crawford will be the third biggest in boxing history and the largest for a stadium show. Only the Floyd Mayweather vs. Mann Pacquiao super fight and the Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor spectacle brought in more money at the box office.
