Canucks Trade Pitch Lands Former Rangers First-Round Pick

The Vancouver Canucks are having a nice start to the 2025-26 season. They currently sport a 4-2-0 record during the early stages of the campaign and are third in the Pacific Division. They have also won each of their last three games, so there is no question that they are feeling it right now.

Yet, when looking at the Canucks’ current roster, it is fair to argue that they should be looking to add to it. Their forward group, in particular, could use a boost, so it would be understandable if they looked to add.

When looking at trade candidates around the NHL, one player who stands out is New York Rangers forward Brennan Othmann. The former first-round pick could use a change of scenery, and the Canucks could be a good landing spot for him.

Because of this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade pitch that has the Rangers sending Othmann to the Canucks in an early-season trade.

Canucks Get:

  • Brennan Othmann

Rangers Get:

  • 2026 Second-Round Pick
  • 2027 Fourth-Round Pick

With this trade, the Canucks would be landing a former top prospect who still has the potential to break out. The 2021 first-round pick has shown promise at the AHL level over his career, as he had 21 goals and 49 points in 67 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack in 2023-24. He also recorded 12 goals and 20 points in 27 games with Hartford this past season.

The Rangers, on the other hand, would get a second-round pick and fourth-round pick for a player who has had a tough time finding his fit with the club.

Rangers’ Othmann Has Entered Rumor Mill

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Rangers have had talks with interested teams about Othmann early on this season.

“Othmann was sent down to AHL Hartford after failing to make the NHL team, and, since that occurred, there’s been conversations with other clubs about his future,” Friedman wrote. “The Rangers have a lot on the wings and it simply may be that he needs a fresh start elsewhere.”

With Othmann being a 22-year-old former first-round pick, it would be understandable if draws a good amount of interest as the season rolls on. The Canucks would be wise to enter the mix for the young forward with the Rangers willing to listen.

Canucks Viewed as Trade Fit for Rangers’ Othmann

With the Canucks needing help on offense, Bleacher Report’s Adam Gretz recently listed them as among the top potential landing spots for Othmann.

“The Canucks needed some forward depth to begin with, and that necessity has only increased with the absence of Nils Hoglander,” Gretz wrote. “They need to find someone who is affordable and won’t significantly increase the cost of the package. A struggling prospect (Othmann) that needs a change of scenery might be the perfect type of target in that sense.”

According to PuckPedia, Othmann has an $863,333 cap hit for this season. Due to this, the Canucks would not have too much difficulty affording him if they brought him in from the Rangers.

With the Canucks needing more skilled wingers, it would be understandable if they made a push for Othmann. The young forward still has the potential to become a solid NHL player and could take that next step with a team like Vancouver.
