Celtics Could Be Surprise Suitor for Former No. 1 Pick

The Boston Celtics have been cutting costs and creating flexibility, setting themselves up for bigger decisions in 2026. That plan has sparked speculation about who might be on Boston’s radar once the team is ready to use its cap space.

In a recent column, CelticsBlog’s Jack Anderson mentioned Deandre Ayton as one possible target. The former No. 1 overall pick has the size and skill to fill a gap in Boston’s frontcourt, though the idea comes with its share of questions.

Can Ayton Prove It This Season?

At his best, Ayton looks like a reliable starting center. He rebounds at a high level, finishes inside, and has a soft enough touch to hit shots from mid-range. He is not a dominant rim protector, but his seven-foot frame still makes him a presence around the basket. One of his strengths is staying out of foul trouble, which keeps him on the floor for extended minutes.

The challenge is consistency. Ayton has shown stretches of dominant play but also long quiet spells, leaving teams unsure which version they will get. That uncertainty makes him both intriguing and complicated as a Boston option.

This season could shape his value. Playing alongside Luka Doncic and LeBron James, Ayton will be asked to simplify his game — set screens, finish plays, and anchor the paint. If he thrives in that role, his stock could rise heading into free agency.

Why the Celtics Would Consider Ayton

The Celtics do not have a clear long-term answer at center. Neemias Queta, Luka Garza, and Chris Boucher provide depth, but none project as foundational starters. Ayton, with his experience and physical profile, would give Boston a more proven option in the middle.

Thanks to this summer’s financial reset, the front office will finally have flexibility to explore opportunities like this. Boston is projected to be $20 million under the tax and $29 million under the first apron next year, leaving room for a player whose market may not be as strong as it once was.

A Risky Move for the Celtics

Even Anderson noted that Ayton would not be his first choice. A player like Isaiah Hartenstein would be ideal if the chance ever came. Still, Ayton is the type of name who could be in play for Boston. The question is not about talent but commitment. Would he fully buy into a role built on defense, rebounding, and screening rather than touches?

That is the gamble. Ayton could give Boston the interior presence they lack, but if the inconsistency continues, it might turn into a frustrating experiment.

What’s Next for Boston?

The Celtics are unlikely to make a major splash until next summer, when their reset begins to pay off. Ayton may not be the perfect solution, but he has enough talent to warrant consideration if he proves himself this season.

Boston’s need for size will remain. And while Ayton would come with risk, the chance to add him at the right price explains why his name has already entered the conversation.
