The Jaylen Brown Twitch stream is quickly becoming a must-see for hoop fans who love entertaining content, with the Boston Celtics star rarely mincing words about his thoughts and feelings on the league and its players.
In his latest stream on Monday, Brown questioned the integrity of several top scorers in the league and recent MVP winners, though he didn’t specify any names.
“If you wanna be a great player, you gotta sell your soul,” Brown said
“You gotta be a flopper. If you wanna be an MVP, you wanna be top of the top, you gotta sell your soul and just be a flopper.”
Brown made the comments while analyzing a play from Sunday’s 121-113 win over the Toronto Raptors when he got an and-one call for a midrange shot. The 2024 NBA Finals MVP said “it was great” to see him and the Celtics get rewarded and to be sent to the foul line, as he doesn’t “flop” like many of the NBA’s MVPs.
Calling out SGA?
“I don’t wanna flop, that’s not my game. That s**t is whack,” Brown said.
“Some of these dudes are nice, they don’t even need to flop,” he continued, while refusing to name names.
“As soon as you feel contact, just fall to ground — nah, bro. That’s not basketball. That’s the NBA, but it’s not basketball. I’m not a flopper.”
One wonders if Brown was referring to reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has been notoriously labeled a “free-throw merchant” for flopping and compulsively getting to the charity stripe. Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid was subject to similar accusations during his MVP campaign in 2022-23.
This season, SGA has amassed 32.8 points from the foul line, which ranks second to Luka Doncic. However, he led the NBA in the stat last season.
Jaylen Brown MVP Case?
The Celtics, who’ve won 10 of their last 12 games, have quietly jumped to the third seed in the East, after starting the season with a 5-7 record. A lot of that credit obviously goes to Brown, who’s averaging career-highs in points (29.1) and assists (4.9).
Brown was ranked No. 10 on NBA.com’s last Kia MVP Ladder, published on Dec. 5, but he will almost assuredly be ranked higher in the next installment of the list. Basketball Reference’s MVP Tracker also does not have Brown in its top-10, but that can be attributed to the website relying heavily on analytics and true-shooting percentages.
As great a player as Brown is on both ends of the floor, he rarely gets any love from the analytics community due to his true-shooting percentages. This season, too, his effective field goal percentage (54.5) pales in comparison with other MVP candidates such as Nikola Jokic (67.3), SGA (61.3) and Giannis Antetokounmpo (65.6).
Amid the Celtics’ early-season turnaround, Brown has called out the critics who were ready to write off Joe Mazzulla’s team after the first few weeks.
“We feeling good right now,” Brown said last week. “[When] we started off the season 0-3 , we had all types of people that was posting all types of bulls**t. Tell them to post now. We won five of out last six. Tell them to keep that same energy.”
