Jayson Tatum‘s recovery from an Achilles tendon tear has been a hot topic for Boston Celtics fans all summer.
Recently, multiple reports, including some comments from Tatum himself, have begun to provide hope that he could return to the rotation before the end of the season. During an Oct. 5 live stream, Jaylen Brown shared his thoughts on the work Tatum is putting in behind the scenes and the speed at which his recovery is progressing.
“You can recover from anything, you know, long as you like put the work in,” Brown said. (If) you got a good diet. You do what you got to do. So now shout out the JT. JT is superhuman. He’s on some Wolverine s—.”
Tatum has been seen walking around without a protective boot, working out with some of the Celtics coaches, and attending events, including a recent appearance at Duke. And, while Tatum’s return to the court is far from near, there is growing confidence that he could be ready to go before the end of Boston’s upcoming regular season.
Nevertheless, only time will tell whether Celtics fans do get to see Tatum in the 2025-26 campaign, or whether they’re forced to wait until this time next year.
Tatum Is Already Doing Box Jumps
During a recent conversation with NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg, Xavier Tillman Sr. revealed that Tatum is already doing box jumps in training. Considering he’s only five months removed from tearing his Achilles, that is a significant update for a player who was expected to miss at least 12 months of basketball.
“I mean, I’m seeing this guy do like box jumps and stuff like that, and I’m like, huh? What?” Tillman said.
With each passing week, Boston fans are getting encouraging new updates regarding Tatum. However, it’s worth approaching his recovery with caution. Nothing is guaranteed, especially a return to the court in the coming months.
Fortunately for the Celtics, Tatum appears to be taking things day by day, and that’s the perfect mentality considering the long road he still has ahead of him.
Sam Cassell Provides Update On Tatum
When speaking on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Celtics lead assistant coach Sam Cassell provided an encouraging update regarding Tatum.
“He’s coming along well,” Cassell said. “People keep counting him out, but I like what I’m seeing. He’s active, moving around, doing the work. He’s not limping or slowing down — he’s grinding.”
Tatum enjoyed a stellar 2024-25 season. He averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and six assists, averaging 45.2% from the field and 34.3% from the field. The hope will be that he can eventually return to that level of play, which has seen him named to an All-NBA First Team on four consecutive occasions.
Of course, returning to an All-NBA level won’t be immediate. Even when medically cleared, Tatum will need to develop his fitness, confidence in his body, and feel comfortable being back on the court.
Nevertheless, his current approach has made it clear that not only does he want to return, he wants to prove he’s still one of the best players in the world. And that will be music to Celtics fans’ ears.
