Celtics Now Have a Clear Trade Decision to Make

When the Boston Celtics signed Chris Boucher in the offseason, the move checked several boxes.

A long, mobile big man with shooting range looked like a useful depth piece for a team entering a transitional season. At minimum, Boucher appeared capable of competing for rotation minutes while the roster settled. But now, with Boucher officially eligible to be traded, the situation has reached a clear inflection point.

Four months into the season, he has fallen completely out of Joe Mazzulla’s rotation, registering a run of DNPs and appearing only sporadically as Boston continues to win.

How Boucher Slipped Out of the Celtics Rotation

This was not the result of one poor stretch or a sudden loss of trust.

Boston’s young forward group has stabilized faster than expected. Jordan Walsh, Josh Minott, Baylor Scheierman, and Hugo Gonzalez have each carved out defined roles, providing energy, defensive reliability, and system fit.

That depth has narrowed the margin for error. Boucher, now 32, has not been able to separate himself enough in limited opportunities to justify pushing those younger players aside.

He also has not solved the one swing role that might have expanded his value. As a small-ball five, Boucher lacks the strength to consistently hold up against NBA centers, limiting his usefulness within Mazzulla’s defensive framework.

To his credit, Boucher’s approach has not been an issue. Joe Mazzulla has publicly praised his professionalism and readiness despite inconsistent minutes.

“He has an understanding that he can play on any given night,” Mazzulla said. “When he’s in there, it’s his job to impact winning. It’s always hard for a guy who hasn’t played in a lot of games to go in and have to execute at game speed, and I thought he did that for us. It’s a credit to him, especially given how long he’s been in the league.”

Why Boucher’s Trade Eligibility Changes Everything

Until now, Boston’s options were limited.

With Boucher eligible to be moved, the front office finally has flexibility it lacked earlier in the season. His contract is modest and easily absorbed, making him a realistic piece in cost-conscious deals rather than a focal point.

That matters for a Celtics team that has been increasingly mindful of the luxury tax and long-term roster control.

Boston does not need to act immediately. But the option now exists, and that alone shifts the calculus. If the Celtics choose to make adjustments around the margins, Boucher represents one of the cleanest levers available.

A Move That Could Help Both Boston and Boucher

From Boston’s perspective, a trade would not signal regret. It would reflect clarity.

The Celtics are winning without Boucher. Younger players are filling the minutes. Carrying a veteran who is no longer part of the rotation does little to advance either the short-term product or the long-term plan.

For Boucher, a change of scenery could be beneficial. At this stage of his career, playing time matters. Sitting on the bench for a contender may be comfortable, but it does not help someone positioning himself for his next contract.

A deal could offer him a clearer role and Boston a cleaner rotation.

The Bigger Picture for the Celtics

Boucher’s trade eligibility does not guarantee a move. But it removes the final barrier to one.

With Boucher now movable, the Celtics can finally evaluate his roster spot without limitations. The team has already shown it can win without him, and the rotation has stabilized around younger pieces. If he stays, Boucher has proven time and time again he provides reliable minutes.

Either way, the moment for clarity has arrived.
