The busy snooker season continues on Monday as the Champion of Champions gets underway in Leicester and comes to a climax on Sunday.

The International Championship only came to an end on Sunday in Nanjing, China, but such is the tight turnaround that winner Wu Yize will have to wait till next year to make his Champion of Champions debut.

Mark Williams is the defending champion at the Mattioli Arena this week after his brilliant victory in last year’s event.

The 50-year-old has added the Xi’an Grand Prix title to his epic collection since then, becoming the oldest ever ranking event winner earlier this season.

Most of snooker’s biggest names are involved this week, with the likes of Judd Trump, Kyren Wilson, Mark Selby, Zhao Xintong and Neil Robertson all vying for the title.

The qualification process also gives a chance to the likes of World Women’s Championship winner Bai Yulu and the victor at the World Seniors Championship, Alfie Burden.

The unique group format sees two matches played in the afternoon sessions and the winners meeting later on the same day for a place in the semi-finals.

Why is Ronnie O’Sullivan not in the Champion of Champions?

It has been a dry spell for the Rocket in terms of titles, with his last piece of silverware coming in March 2024 at the World Masters of Snooker in Riyadh.

Without a tournament win in over a year, O’Sullivan did not make it into the field for the Champion of Champions for the first time since it returned to the calendar in 2013.
