The Los Angeles Chargers received reassuring news Monday regarding running back Kimani Vidal.Â
As Yahoo Sports noted, Vidal exited Sundayâs win over the Dallas Cowboys with an apparent neck injury.Â
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Vidal has been diagnosed with a neck strain and is considered âday-to-dayâ following an MRI.Â
Head coach Jim Harbaugh echoed that assessment during his Monday media availability.Â
He noted that all of the Chargersâ injured players from Sunday are âday to day,â including Vidal.Â
How the Injury Happened and What Comes Next
Vidal was forced out late in the Chargersâ 34-17 win at AT&T Stadium, leaving in the second half after absorbing contact on a run.Â
He finished with five carries for 11 yards while logging 21 offensive snaps before being shut down as a precaution.Â
Tests revealed a neck strain which is an outcome the team views as best-case given the initial concern.Â
While a precise return timeline hasnât been announced, the âday-to-dayâ designation suggests Vidal avoided a serious structural issue.Â
His practice participation over the next few days will be the key indicator.
With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Chargers are expected to be cautious.Â
But the optimism surrounding his diagnosis points to a quicker recovery rather than a long-term absence.Â
Why the Update Is Big for the Chargersâ Stretch Run
The news is especially encouraging given Vidalâs importance to the offense this season.Â
Vidal stepped into the RB1 for a big part of the season when Omarion Hamtpon went down.Â
Even after the return of Omarion Hampton, Vidal has remained a reliable contributor, showcasing versatility and toughness in a crowded backfield. Â
Through Week 16, he has totaled 631 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 152 carries.Â
He also has 15 catches for 138 receiving yards and a touchdown through the air.Â
Harbaughâs confirmation was welcome news for a Chargers team balancing the push for the postseason with caution around player health.
The Chargers officially clinched a playoff berth last night but still have a legitimate chance to win the AFC West by winning their last two games of the season.Â
If Vidal is limited or unavailable for Saturdayâs matchup against the Houston Texans, Hampton would be in line for an expanded workload.
Hassan Haskins will likely step in as the RB2.
More updates on Vidalâs status for Saturday will be provided throughout the week.
Vidal’s presence would provide the Chargers much-needed depth in a backfield that compliments each other so well.
But for now, the Chargers get positive news on injury that once looked concerning.
Vidalâs diagnosis gives LA some confidence heading into the final stretch, with optimism he can return sooner rather than later.
