Chicago Bears Catch Big Break Right Before Saints Game

The Chicago Bears are at that interesting point in the season when they’re not doing stellar but also aren’t doing poorly, so there’s still plenty of hope in the Windy City. The team is 3-2 going into Week 7 of the NFL season, and momentum is really starting to build for them. There’s so much different this year, of course, because the Chicago Bears have a new head coach in Ben Johnson, who hails from the Detroit Lions, and a collection of new staffers.

The Bears came out of their bye week with a too-close-for-comfort win over the Washington Commanders on Monday, October 13, and next, they’re up against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, October 19, at home. The Saints are 1-5, so this should be an easy win for the Bears, but, of course, there are no easy wins in the NFL.

Heading into Sunday’s game, there’s been a lot of injury news coming out of the Bears’ camp. Some of it is good, and some of it is mixed. But, on Saturday, October 18, the team announced some great news right before the Saints matchup.

On Saturday, the Chicago Bears announced that the team has activated running back Travis Homer from the reserve/injured tally. The team also elevated defensive lineman Jonathan Ford and kicker Jake Moody from the practice squad for the upcoming matchup against the New Orleans Saints. As NFL rules state, all standard elevations will revert back to the practice squad following the game.

In not as good news, defensive lineman Austin Booker and linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga have been downgraded to out. They stay on reserve/injured. The Chicago Bears have also signed defensive lineman Tanoh Kpassagnon to the franchise’s practice squad.

Chicago Bears running back D’Andre Swift is also expected to return to the field on Sunday, which is huge. “I can’t wait,” Swift said of the impending return, according to ESPN. “Another opportunity against a good opponent coming in. Try to stay on the track that we’re on. Just another opportunity.”

Wide receiver DJ Moore also doesn’t carry an injury designation after a hospital visit after last week’s matchup.

Chicago Bears Quarterback Caleb Williams

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is finally getting some respect in the NFL. The Bears selected Williams as their No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and there have always been high expectations on his shoulder.

In a piece out on Wednesday, October 15, of CBS Sports rattles off his top quarterbacks heading into the NFL’s Week 7. “Every signal-caller is often only as good as his setup and situation, though a select few register as transcendent talents,” he says.

He has Williams up a spot from last week, at No. 17. “His numbers still aren’t gaudy under the direction of new coach Ben Johnson, but guess what?” he said. “He played winning football in prime time to upset the Commanders, and that’s not nothing. He’s quietly making strides as an energetic manager.”

Now, Williams has to prove that his positive streak on the field isn’t a fluke. He can do that against the Saints.
