Chiefs Announce Patrick Mahomes News for Travis Kelce’s Potential Final Game

Patrick Mahomes will be watching from his couch as the Kansas City Chiefs close out the season.

The Chiefs quarterback has already started the rehab and recovery process after suffering a season-ending torn ACL in the team’s Week 15 loss, and apparently is cutting out unnecessary travel. The team announced this week that Mahomes would not be making the final road trip of the season — and won’t be there in person for what could be teammate Travis Kelce’s final NFL game.

Andy Reid Announces Patrick Mahomes Decision

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced this week that Mahomes would stay behind when the team travels to Las Vegas to play the Raiders on Sunday.

“He’s around, so he’s in the building and working, doing his rehab and spending a lot of hours doing it,” Reid said, via the Kansas City Star. “He’s really attacked that and will continue to do that. So he’s around and sees the guys, but most of his time is being spent rehabbing.”

Mahomes was seen watching from a suite when the Chiefs lost to the Denver Broncos on Christmas, but the team decided to keep him from the rigors of travel as he works through the complicated injury. Mahomes tore not only his ACL but also his LCL, making for a more difficult recovery that could potentially stretch into next season.

The Chiefs also lost backup quarterback Gardner Minshew to a season-ending injury, leaving third-stringer Chris Oladokun to close out the season.

Travis Kelce Could Be Playing in Final Game

Kelce reportedly considered retirement in the last offseason, but decided to return in an attempt to avenge the team’s blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. The team’s fortunes took an even worse turn this year, leading to their playoff elimination early in December and the first sub-.500 season in more than a decade.

Kelce has been quiet about his plans, telling reporters that he’s still considering his next move and would be discussing his future with his family.

“I’ll let that be a decision I’ll make with my family, friends and the Chiefs organization when the time comes,” he said, via the Los Angeles Times.

Kelce appeared to strike a wistful note, sending a message to the fans who have supported him.

“You only get a few of those where you get to stand there and appreciate 70,000 Chiefs fans cheering for you,” he explained. “I always embrace that moment.

“You feel the generations of happiness and the love [the fans] have. It’s a beautiful thing, man.”

At least one on Kelce’s teammates hopes he returns. Veteran defensive lineman Chris Jones said after the team’s Christmas loss to the Broncos that he doesn’t want to see Kelce hang up his cleats just yet.

“I hope not, man,” Jones said. “We have just been through so much together, and Travis has been a pivotal part of this offense for so long, and he’s been like a brother … I hope this isn’t the last year. I hope he gives it one more year. Just one more.”
