Chiefs Doc ‘The Kingdom’ Reveals Big Patrick Mahomes News

Even though the regular season for the Kansas City Chiefs doesn’t start until next month, those in Kansas City who fill their time watching football can get their fix by watching the preseason or the new Chiefs documentary, “The Kingdom.” The series really comes at the perfect time, because it’s right before the season kick off, so it’s during that last hump before “real” football begins. Let’s go.

“The Kingdom” is a new ESPN original series directed by Kristen Lappas of Words + Pictures and produced by a lot of the same team that created “The Last Dance.” The six-episode docuseries follows the team’s road to Super Bowl LIX and also gives some fascinating history about the franchise in the NFL.

The first episode of the series debuted on Thursday, August 14, and it gave us a cool story about Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The series will debut new episodes through Wednesday, August 20, when the final episode, titled “The Pursuit,” drops. Viewers are able to watch on ESPN, and all six episodes will be available to stream on ESPN+.

Patrick Mahomes’ Story on His Road to the Kansas City Chiefs

Mahomes was destined for the Kansas City Chiefs, but it took the powers at be to make it happen. Brett Veach, of course, was the guy who helped select Mahomes in the draft, and he told a story about it on “The Kingdom.”

In a scene from the show, Veach drops the news that his daughter was a major reason that Veach made sure to get Mahomes on draft night. His daughter wanted to select Mahomes because of a scene from the film “Draft Day.”

“We had watched [‘Draft Day’] weeks prior to the draft and so, [Veach’s daughter] did see that one part of Draft Day where Costner’s character had the name written down,” Veach said on the show. “I was just getting to leave and she hands me the card… it said ‘Pat no matter what’. There’s nothing more special than your daughter writing that.”

So, the Chiefs actually have Veach’s daughter to thank for their Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes Deserves More Respect in Latest Tally

Dan Orlovsky of ESPN ranks the best quarterbacks in the NFL by their specific traits in a feature that ran on August 11. Mahomes was not number one in any of them, which we think it a bit of an oversight.

He did get ranked No. 2 for arm strength, only behind Josh Allen. “The best in the game at this is Allen, but the top four on my list — including Mahomes, Herbert and Jackson — are collectively in a league of their own,” Orlovsky stated. “Allen connected on 15 tight-window throws 10 or more yards downfield last season, tied for the third most in the NFL.”

Mahomes also ranked No. 2 in second-reaction ability. “These are the best of the best in off-schedule and off-platform throws, which often demand nonstandard arm angles on the move,” Orlovsky said. “It’s where a quarterback’s creativity can really shine.”

So, even if Mahomes is No. 2 and not No. 1 on these tallies, he’s still No. 1 to the Chiefs Kingdom. The new season can’t start soon enough.
