After a slow start to the 2025 campaign, the Kansas City Chiefs appear to be headed in the right direction as they prepare for their Week 8 action. Several key players, particularly on the offensive side of the ball, are back in the fold after initially being forced to miss time, which has helped the team rattle off wins in three of their past four games.
The Chiefs still have a lot of work to do, and it starts with taking care of business against the Washington Commanders in their upcoming game. Ahead of this matchup, Kansas City was dealt a concerning injury update regarding running back Kareem Hunt, but head coach Andy Reid quickly eased the concerns surrounding his status.
Andy Reid Provides Kareem Hunt Injury Update
One of the biggest issues for the Chiefs to begin the new season has been their inability to run the football. Despite having both Isiah Pacheco and Hunt available for all seven games, this duo has combined for just 476 yards and four touchdowns on 119 carries. When considering how Patrick Mahomes has 250 yards and four scores on just 42 carries, he’s been Kansas City’s most effective runner so far this year, which isn’t exactly a good sign.
The run game, or lack thereof, didn’t matter much in Week 7, as the Chiefs throttled the Las Vegas Raiders by a score of 31-0. Moving forward, though, it’s clear that Pacheco and Hunt are going to have to be more effective, and the hope is that having key pass catchers like Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy back in the fold will help open up more room for them on the ground.
The problem, at least for Hunt, is that he is dealing with a worrisome knee injury that resulted in him missing the team’s latest practice on Thursday afternoon. And while he didn’t suit up, Reid explained that the team is simply taking a cautious approach with the veteran running back ahead of its upcoming game.
“Kareem Hunt has a bone bruise on his knee,” Reid revealed on Thursday. “He’s gonna be OK, but just gonna have him sit out today.”

Missing a practice is never a great sign when it comes to injuries, but Reid didn’t sound overly worried about Hunt’s status. And yet, while the team appears to be playing it safe with him, his status for the team’s next two practices will bear watching. If he can’t log at least a limited session on one of those two days, he could very well miss the Chiefs’ upcoming game.
The good news for Kansas City is that, with its Week 8 contest against Washington being scheduled for Monday Night Football, Hunt will have an extra day to get himself ready for this game. Reid seems unfazed by Hunt’s appearance on the injury report, but it will be worth monitoring his status over the next few days.
