Chiefs Hollywood Brown Expected to Face Punishment For Jaguars Game Actions

The Kansas City Chiefs dropped to 2-3 Monday night, the second time in the nine-year career of future Hall of Fame quarterback Patrick Mahomes that he has led his team to a losing record in the first five games of the season. The Chiefs committed a stunning 13 penalties, their most since November 19, 2018 — also a Monday night game.

All of it added up to a 31-28 loss to the now 4-1 Jacksonville Jaguars, who went ahead on a mad, one-yard touchdown scramble by quarterback Trevor Lawrence with 23 seconds left on the clock, a play that began with Lawrence falling flat on his face behind the line of scrimmage, only to get back on his feet and run the ball into the end zone.

But one Chiefs player may end up feeling the pain of the shocking defeat even more acutely than his teammates, because he will likely be hit with a fine by the NFL league office after he appeared to throw an open-handed slap at an opponent, an action that left some fans wondering why the Kansas City player — wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown — was not ejected from the game.

The incident occurred on a play midway through the first quarter after Brown and Jaguars cornerback Jourdan Lewis tussled in the secondary, with Lewis grabbing Brown by the jersey. Brown then came facemask-to-facemask with Lewis, first jawing at him then letting loose with a roundhouse, right-handed slap.

Possible Fine Could Top $40K

Brown was assessed an unnecessary roughness penalty for the blow, setting the Chiefs back 15 yards. But Mahomes was able to overcome the setback, ultimately finishing the nine-play, 72-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kelce.

But the story is probably not over for Brown. Unnecessary roughness calls usually draw discipline from the league and depending on how officials in the NFL Football Operations Department evaluate the video of Brown’s actions, the punishment could cover a wide range. If they judge that Brown merely exhibited “unsportsmanlike conduct,” they could assess him a fine as low as $14,491.

On the other hand, if the look at the video and decide that Brown’s aggressive actions constituted what the league sees as “fighting,” the punishment handed down to the 2019 first-round draft pick could be much steeper. Fighting violations carry a fine of $40,686 for a first offense, or $81,374 for a second.

Brown’s First Penalty of 2025

The unnecessary roughness call on Brown, however, was the only flag of the season so far assessed on the seven-year veteran, now in his second season with the Chiefs. Brown did not draw a single flag last season, after picking up three in 2023, his final of two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

That total tied his career high, which came in his sophomore season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2021, when the former Oklahoma Sooner also picked up three penalties.

Fans Wanted Brown Ejected

Fans online did not feel that a 15-yard penalty was enough punishment for Brown’s actions.

“Someone’s gotta explain how you can punch a guy and not get ejected, especially with replay assist and especially with Hollywood Brown doing it right in front of an official,” wrote one typical fan, as quoted by The Daily Mail newspaper.

“How is Hollywood Brown allowed to stay in the game? He threw a punch!!!” wrote another, who was echoed by a third fan who asked, “How is Hollywood Brown not thrown out of the game????”
