Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce may have played his final game at Arrowhead Stadium — and it ended with some controversy.
Kelce and the Chiefs hosted the Denver Broncos on a Christmas night showdown with nothing on the line for Kansas City. They had already been eliminated from playoff contention two weeks ago, and came into the game with third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun at the helm after season-ending injuries to Patrick Mahomes and Gardner Minshew.
There was still plenty of attention on Kelce, but the Chiefs made sure he got some privacy on what could be his final walk back to the locker room.
Chiefs Take Heat for Keeping Cameras From Travis Kelce
Kelce appeared to soak in the moments of his final game, showing emotion during the national anthem and spending time high-fiving fans after the final whistle.
But as Kelce began to walk down the tunnel toward the locker room, a team staffer physically stopped a camera crew from Amazon Prime from following him. The incident was broadcast live, leading to some criticism of the Chiefs.
“THIS WAS VERY WEIRD⦠A Kansas City #Chiefs staffer got into it with the Prime Video broadcast cameraman who was trying to follow Travis Kelce into the locker room,” the MLFootball account shared on X, along with a video of the incident. “This footage was shown live on the broadcast.”
NFL reporter Chase Snyder noted that the staff member who prevented the camera crew from following Kelce also blocked a camera after the team’s Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers — both times earning the ire of broadcaster Al Michaels.
“This is a guy that loves his job and shutting down heartwarming moments in Chiefs history. And loves making enemies with Al Michaels,” Snyder shared in a post on X.
Travis Kelce Addresses Retirement Rumors
Kelce had been avoiding media after each of the team’s last two losses, but took questions following the Christmas night loss and addressed the rumors about his retirement.
Kelce said he had yet to make a final decision and was just focusing on finishing the season first.
âIâve been just focused on trying to win football games, man,â Kelce told reporters, via KMBC. âIâll let that be a decision that I make with my family, friends, the Chiefs organization….when the time comes.â
But Kelce did strike a nostalgic mood, reminiscing about his first games at Arrowhead Stadium and sharing love for the fans.
âYou feel that the first game you go to,â Kelce said. âI remember going to the games my rookie year, even when I was in the suites with a knee brace on. You feel the excitement. I think we won our first eight games when we got here, and it was by the time we got to our fifth, sixth game at home, and it was rocking, and people were here loud and proud. It was just a beautiful thing, man. So I would probably say my rookie year, you really found how special this place is.â
