The Indianapolis Colts came into Week 12’s matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs with one of the best records in the NFL. Daniel Jones and company were sporting a record of 8-2 and were hoping to take advantage of a struggling Chiefs squad that had dropped two in a row.
Although it looked like the Colts were in control for most of the game and were well on their way to securing their ninth win of the 2025 NFL season, Patrick Mahomes and his squad showed some resiliency, forcing overtime and then ultimately winning by a field goal to go over .500 at 6-5 and snap their two-game skid.
Colts’ Shane Steichen Takes Blame for Loss to Chiefs

After the Colts failed to capitalize on an opportunity to beat the Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, a frustrated head coach, Shane Steichen, spoke to the media and seemed to take the blame for Indianapolis’ loss, which was only the third time this season.
“We got to be better,” Steichen said. “I have to be better.”
Steichen repeated the phrase “I have to be better” multiple times during his postgame press conference, as he clearly knows that his decision-making down the stretch in this game against the Chiefs likely cost them the game.
“I think being efficient on first and 10,” Steichen said. “I thought at times we did that a little bit. We didn’t do that enough in the second half. It wasn’t good enough, and it starts with myself. I think we’ve got to be better in all phases. Run and pass, moving the football.”
Despite the Colts being one of the best teams in the league this season, the division rival Jacksonville Jaguars are right behind them at 7-4, which makes the race for the AFC South division title that much more interesting in the final stretch of the regular season.
Colts Will Try to Hold Off Jaguars in AFC South

The Colts have been cruising for the majority of the 2025 NFL season, with the consensus being that Steichen’s squad would win the AFC South division title with relative ease while holding off the Jaguars and the Houston Texans.
However, after losing to the Chiefs on the road in overtime in Week 12, the Jaguars are only one game back of Jonathan Taylor and company, which makes the final stretch of the regular season interesting, to say the least.
Even though the Texans are making a second-half push, winning four of their last four games, the AFC South has shifted from the Colts being the team to beat to Houston and Jacksonville getting competitive, with a chance to move up in the division standings.
It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out in the division and if the Jaguars and or Texans take advantage of the Colts if they start to struggle in the last six games of the regular season, where three games will be played against these divisional opponents.
