Colts Named Landing Spot For WR Seeking Contract Extension

The Colts are still figuring out if Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones will be behind the center against the Miami Dolphins in week 1 of the 25-26 season.

With the QB issue not resolved, an NFL writer believes trading for a wide receiver could see more production from either Richardson or Jones.

CBS Sports Cody Benjamin names the Colts as a landing spot for Washington Commanders’ wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

“This is something of a make-or-break year for Shane Steichen’s offense, and all signs point to the Colts leaning on a combination of Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson under center. That spells trouble,” Benjamin wrote for CBS Sports.

“Perhaps the best way to offset that predicament is by further stocking the cupboard out wide, especially with not a ton of resources devoted to the quarterback spot. Washington might only move McLaurin if it can get veteran help in return, so it’s also possible Indy would throw another wideout back to D.C. to facilitate a deal.”

McLaurin is currently in a contract dispute with the Commanders, as the player seeks to sign a contract that pays him a minimum of $30 million per year. The receiver held out of the team’s mandatory minicamp.

Indianapolis was switching between Richardson and Joe Flacco at quarterback, three Colts receivers were able to catch for more than 800+ yards last season

If the Colts were to trade for Terry McLaurin, it would add a fourth WR to hit that mark.

McLaurin would join the group with Michael Pittman Jr., Alec Pierce and Josh Downs. The Colts also have second-year receiver Adonai Mitchell, who was named for a breakout season by PFF.

With the addition of the 2025 first-round selection, tight end Tyler Warren, “Scary” Terry would see fewer targets in a loaded receiving room.

McLaurin led the Commanders in targets last season and had 20 more than the next player.

Indianapolis has the cap space available to give McLaurin the contract he is after. The Colts currently have around $20 million in cap space, with almost $59 million for the 2026-27 season.

Colts Biggest 2025 Training Camp Battles

If McLaurin were to be sent to the Colts, it would be hard for him to replicate the stats he is doing with the Commanders.

Anthony Richardson has been iffy in his first two seasons in the league and is recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained during OTAs. Richardson should be ready for training camp.

Daniel Jones has not been able to live up to the hype of first-round draft selection, showing only glimpses of what he can be.

“Basically, just be there for both of them,” Pierce said on how he plans to handle the competition between Richardson and Jones. “Communicate with both of them, treat them both like they’re the starting quarterback, and just ask what they need from me, if they want to get extra balls or whatever.”

McLaurin could help relieve some of the pressure on both Richardson and Jones by being a reliable target, but he can only do so much.
