The Indianapolis Colts are shutting down one of their young offensive tackles for the remainder of the 2025 season after his latest injury in NFL training camp.
According to the team’s official transaction wire, the Colts placed second-year offensive tackle Jack Wilson on the injured reserve list and signed veteran defensive tackle Josh Tupou on Monday in a pair of corresponding moves that keep them at the roster limit.
Wilson had missed two consecutive practices with a pecotral injury before the team put him on injured reserve. Because Wilson has landed on IR before the regular season, he will likely miss the entire 2025 season unless the Colts designate him for return during the 53-man roster cutdown — which is unlikely, as they can only do so with two players.
The Colts could also waive Wilson with an injury settlement at a later date, which would open the door for him to play for another NFL team in 2025 once he is healthy again.
Jack Wilson Faced Long Odds to Make Colts’ Roster
Wilson’s injury leaves the Colts with one fewer offensive tackle vying for a role in their 2025 rotation behind starters Bernhard Raimann and Braden Smith, but he had steep odds to make the initial 53-man roster in the first place, given his development status.
Wilson is an intriguing physical specimen who has a gargantuan 6-foot-11 frame and a background playing college basketball. While he walked on with Washington State’s football program, though, he primarily contributed snaps on special teams and did not develop a strong profile as a future NFL offensive lineman, despite his physical gifts.
Wilson also didn’t even play football during his final year of eligibility, transferring to Minnesota for basketball and making the hardwood his primary focus over the turf.
Nevertheless, Wilson intrigued the Colts enough for them to give him multiple shots at proving himself as a developmental player for their offensive line. They initially signed him to their practice squad last October before releasing him weeks later, but they re-signed him to a futures contract in January and carried him through the offseason.
Unfortunately, an injury means the end of the line for Wilson, regardless of what the Colts’ coaches learned about him and his potential for their squad heading into 2025.
Josh Topou Has 23 Career Starts as Defensive Lineman
On Monday, the Colts also made an addition to their defensive line with the signing of Tupou, who had worked out with six other players for the team at Saturday’s practice.
Tupou brings a pinch of experience to the Colts’ interior defensive line battle behind starters DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart. He has made 23 starts and appeared in 68 games over his first seven seasons in the league, spending most of his time with the Cincinnati Bengals before jumping over to the Baltimore Ravens’ roster in 2024.
While Tupou lacks production — only three career sacks — he should give them a more seasoned option to consider in camp as they work out their depth and practice-squad roles at the position. The Colts also have two rookies — including sixth-round pick Tim Smith — and 2022 fifth-round pick Eric Johnson II trying to earn in-season roles.
