Colts QB Daniel Jones Assigns Blame After Tough Loss to Steelers

Coming into Week 9, the Indianapolis Colts were sporting the best record in the NFL at 7-1, with the team looking like a legitimate Super Bowl title contender in the AFC. The team has been well coached with Shane Stiechen on the sideline while having two resurgent stars leading the way on the field in quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Jonathan Taylor.

Even though the Colts have been playing at a high level throughout the first eight games of the season, there have been some that didn’t buy that this run was real and it would be only a matter of time before the wheels fall off. Week 9’s matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers might have been the perfect example of the Colts flaws, as they suffered only their second loss of the season.

After the Colts lost to the Steelers on Sunday, 27-20, Jones spoke to the media after let it be known that turnovers were the biggest problem for Indianapolis and that it starts with him.

“When you look at any game, turnovers are the key,” Jones said during his postgame press conference. “(Committing) Turnovers as many times as we did today, you are going to have a tough time to win.”

Jones threw a season-high three interceptions and fumbled three times, losing two. Five total turnovers committed by the veteran quarterback, which he addressed.

“Obviously, that’s on me. I have to protect the ball better and make sure we’re giving ourselves a chance. I thought we did some good things at times, but just turnovers and some of those things I’ve got to clean up and make sure we’re not hurting ourselves.”

Jones went a bit more indepth about what he needs to do moving forward to prevent costly turnovers.

“I think fundamentally, it’s always about keeping the ball tight and securing it. … I just have to make sure I do a better job at that and getting the ball out on time when I can. That’s always my job.”

With Jones having this forgettable performance, he’ll be put under the microscope heading into Week 10 with the team set to face the Atlanta Falcons.

Did the Colts Get Exposed by the Steelers?

Jones’ career resurgence with the Colts has been a hot topic of discussion during the first half of the 2025 NFL season. Many believed the veteran quarterback’s days of being a starting quarterback in the league were over after a disappointing end to his stint with the New York Giants and not even getting on the field for the Minnesota Vikings last season.

In Week 9, after making a case for to be an NFL MVP candidate leading the Colts to a 7-1 record, Jones had his worst performance under center for Indianapolis, committing five turnovers, which prove to be the difference in the loss to the Steelers.

Even though this was an ugly performance from the former first-round draft pick, it’s far to early to say he and the Colts have been exposed, as a bounce-back performance in Week 10 agianst the Falcons is all he needs to put the noise to rest.
