The injuries woes for the Indianapolis Colts’ secondary continue.
Cornerback Kenny Moore suffered a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for the time being. Indy lost rookie CB Justin Walley in a joint practice where he tore his ACL, forcing the third-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft to miss his rookie season.
Needing to reinforce the depleted position group, A to Z Sports’ Destin Adams named former Defensive Player of the Year, and former Colt, Stephon Gilmore, as a player Indy should consider signing.
“Future Hall of Famer Stephon Gilmore spent a season with the Colts in 2022. Gilmore had a successful season, starting 16 games and recording two interceptions as the team’s top outside CB. The team’s season, on the other hand, was a hot mess. The Colts only won four games and fired head coach Frank Reich mid-season. With the Colts set to go through a rebuild, they elected to do right by Gilmore and trade him to the Dallas Cowboys,” Adams wrote. “Even since his departure, Gilmore has spoken highly of his time with the Colts.”
“Gilmore will turn 35 in September and is nearing the end of his career. However, that is one reason he could make sense for the Colts this year. The team has multiple young players it likes at the position for the future, but the outlook for CB in 2025 has taken a significant hit.”
Outside of the 2 interceptions Stephon Gilmore hauled with the Colts, he also had 11 pass deflections and 66 total tackles.
Stephon Gilmore As CB2

Charavarius Ward is the only cornerback with a guaranteed starting position when the regular season begins.
Stephon Gilmore won the DPOY award and is a five-time Pro Bowler who can bring a high amount of experience to a weakened Colts secondary.
Gilmore will likely get first-team reps with the Colts defense with most of the corners hurt, but will need to get acclimated to Lou Anarumo’s defensive scheme.
“I want to play this year, it’s just got to be the right situation,” Gilmore said on The Money Down podcast, via NFL. “It’s got to be the right situation for me. I’m not just gonna sign anywhere. … I still love the game. I still can contribute. It’s just got to be the right place.”
Help Develop the Younger Corners

The Colts’ cornerback position has young players who can shine if healthy.
Justin Walley was receiving first-team reps alongside Ward before his ACL tear. Cornerbacks JuJu Brents and Jaylon Jones, who are dealing with a hamstring injury and Kenny Moore (entering year 9) can learn from the two-time First-Team All-Pro and former DPOY.
Jones has played two full seasons, starting 27 games and could look to improve his game in his third season in the NFL. Brents has had an injured riddle career, allowing Gilmore to step in if he were to join the Colts.
As Adams mentioned, Gilmore will be the short-term option on the field, but he can help the younger players in the Colts’ secondary, which could allow the team to have a top secondary in the league in the future.
