Colts Urged To Considered 2 CBs After Injury Forces Rookie Out

The Indianapolis Colts drafted cornerback Justin Walley out of the University of Minnesota in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, but will have to wait to see his

Walley was receiving first-team reps throughout training camp and appeared to be CB2 starting alongside new Colts signing Charvarius Ward, before suffering a torn ACL in a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens that will sideline the corner in his rookie year.

“It’s a huge blow, huge blow,’’ Steichen said, via MSN. “He was having a helluva camp. His man coverage skills were great. He was making a ton of plays in practice, too, before it happened. Just an unfortunate situation for him, obviously being a rookie and going through that.”

Now looking for answers at the second starting cornerback spot, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox urges Indianapolis to consider two free agent CBs to bolster the position group.

Rasul Douglas

Knox believes the Colts should consider going after former Buffalo Bills cornerback Rasul Douglas.

“Cornerback Rasul Douglas didn’t have a great season in Buffalo last year. The soon-to-be 30-year-old (August 29) started 15 games but allowed an opposing passer rating of 122.0 in coverage. That hasn’t stopped the former playmaker (19 career INTs) from drawing interest this offseason,” Knox wrote. “A couple of injuries may have opened up new opportunities for the 80-game starter.”

“If Douglas is adamant about landing a starting role, he’d be a logical target for the Indianapolis Colts. Rookie third-round pick Justin Walley appeared on his way to earning a starting job in Indy before suffering a torn ACL in a joint practice…”

The eight-year veteran logged 5 pass deflections and recorded 58 tackles in 15 games with the Bills last season.

Douglas reportedly declined a contract offer from the Miami Dolphins.

Asante Samuel Jr

Former Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. was absent the majority of the 2024-25 season after dealing with stinger symptoms, but is ready to return to the field.

B/R’s Knox lists the former second-round pick as another cornerback option for Indianapolis.

“Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. carries his own health concerns after missing all but four games in 2024 with a stinger issue. However, the 2021 second-round pick was a promising cover corner before last season,” Knox wrote. “According to The Athletic’s Daniel Popper, Samuel’s stinger issue isn’t new, which makes the corner a bit of a risk-reward option.”

“He would make sense for the rebuilding Colts too, given their loss of Walley before the season even began.”

Asante Samuel Jr can provide great value to Indy’s secondary, as the player has registered 6 interceptions and 37 pass deflections in his four-year career so far.

The Colts could use Samuel Jr as a short-term option while waiting for Justin Walley to recover from his season-ending injury.
