With roster spots and depth chart positioning still undetermined, the Washington Commanders are heading into one of the most pivotal stretches of training camp with one rookie already living up to the hype.
ESPN’s John Keim reported on Monday that second-round cornerback Trey Amos “continues to look sharp,” and has already been earning steady first-team reps.
“He picked off a ball that receiver Chris Moore had hit off his hands — Amos was right with him over the middle,” Keim wrote. Later, Amos smothered receiver Luke McCaffrey on a fade down the right side; McCaffrey had no shot at the ball. Amos’ ability to play press man coverage is a big help; he has good length and is patient. He did allow one catch over the middle to Deebo Samuel, but as defensive coordinator Joe Whitt said, “Trey has had a good day every day.”
Consistency this early is always encouraging for a rookie. But for a rookie that’s dealing with instant pressure to succeed at one of football’s most demanding positions, it’s a statement — one that suggests he could become a cornerstone of Washington’s secondary.
Amos Could Make A Quick Impact
Labeled a smart, smooth technician with elite measurables coming out of Ole Miss, Amos was sought by the Commanders to be a developmental starter to build around for the future. So far in camp, he’s making good on that hope.
He’s built for the moment after spending ample time in the SEC — leading the conference with 13 pass breakups over 13 games and anchored one of the best defenses in Rebels history.
At 6-foot-1 with long arms and a natural feel for route recognition, he’s taking most of his reps with the starters, but also pivoting back and forth with the second unit — as Keim noted.
Amos has looked promising, even against the Commanders’ best pass catchers. Improvement with defending over-the-middle throws has been his priority, but the overall takeaway is how unfazed he is mixing it up with one of the NFL’s top-scoring offenses from 2024.
Commanders’ Week 1 Preseason Matchup Will Showcase Defense
The Commanders’ secondary is still in transition, but it’s quickly becoming a strength that they might have been missing late last year.
Ahead of a Week 1 preseason bout with the New England Patriots on Friday, it’ll be interesting to see just how Washington’s promising defensive back group pulls it all together for the first time in live action.
Former wide receiver Santana Moss is “invested in” Amos’ potential, as he already called it out on Command Center.
“To have a rookie playing at the level he is right now at camp and having coaches saying ‘Hey, this guy locked this guy up,’ that’s diamond hands,” Moss said on August 1, per Anna Newkirk of Commanders.com.
Will Harris and Quan Martin are also gearing up for big campaigns with the Commanders in 2025. Harris, a free-agent safety signing in the the offseason, has impressed with his versatility. Martin has been deemed “a little Ed Reed” with his instinctive play.
For now, though, Amos has been the standout in Ashburn.
