Commanders Countdown: Inside Quinn and Peters’ Final Roster Decisions

The Washington Commanders are staring at one of the most critical deadlines of the offseason. By Tuesday at 4 pm EST, head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters must reduce the roster to 53 players. Between now and then, every practice rep and film session matters, and both men will spend countless hours evaluating talent, planning contingencies, and exploring potential roster moves.

Quinn knows the weight of these decisions. “Yeah, this is a challenging time for us. You have to make difficult decisions, but we’ve been meeting a lot leading up until now. So, we watch practice together every day. We spend a lot of time, and so the evaluations keep going,” Quinn said after the team’s final preseason outing.

Those evaluations include not only who makes the 53, but also who lands on the expanded 70-man group that includes practice squad players. The front office will also monitor the trade and waiver markets to see if a late addition could bolster depth.

Peters’ experience in roster construction makes him a crucial voice during this process.

Evaluations, Standouts, and Tough Calls

For Quinn and Peters, this final stretch is not only about cutting players but also recognizing emerging talent. The head coach pointed to cornerback Antonio Hamilton Jr. and rookie linebacker Jordan Magee as recent standouts. “Certainly there were some guys today that impressed me, and Antonio Hamilton was another one that played physical. I was so pumped to see Jordan Magee out on the field today. He’s such a good linebacker, and so for him to get back out and get some playing experience today, I thought that was really important,” Quinn said.

These types of flashes matter when coaches and executives sit down in the war room. A big hit in practice, a special teams play, or consistent execution on assignments could be the difference between a roster spot and an in-person meeting delivering tough news. Every evaluation session comes with high stakes, and every conversation between Quinn and Peters could shift the direction of the final roster.

But the process does not truly stop when Tuesday arrives. Quinn acknowledged that adjustments could follow immediately afterward. “We go through the next few days together and just kind of make sure going through all the looks and where it’s at, and then as it gets in from Tuesday to Wednesday, slight changes take place then too.”

That means the first version of the Commanders’ 53-man roster may not be the one fans see by Week 1. Peters could add a player cut by another team, or an injury situation could force last-minute juggling.

The Final Stretch Before the Deadline

For Washington fans, these next few days are all about anticipation. The Commanders’ front office must balance the excitement of young players fighting for jobs with the reality that beloved names may not survive cutdown day. Quinn and Peters will continue to pore over practice film, weigh injury concerns, and consider trade options before locking in the final 53.

When the deadline arrives on Tuesday at 4 pm EST, Washington’s roster will finally take shape. But as Quinn hinted, it may only be the beginning of another wave of moves. For fans, the wait is almost over, and the story of the 2025 season will soon have its first chapter written.
