Entering the trade deadline, there might not be a more intriguing team to watch around the NFL than the Washington Commanders. A season ago, it looked like the Commanders were a team that could be very good for a long time. Unfortunately, while that’s still the case, the injuries have really piled up for Washington, and as a result, things might not exactly get better before the deadline.Â
Despite that, some continue to link them to potential blockbuster deals for outstanding players around the league. The latest to do so was Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, who suggested they could make a move for Mark Andrews of the Baltimore Ravens.Â
âBaltimore might prefer to retain every proven weapon in hopes of salvaging an injury-ravaged season, but Andrews is no longer the steady playmaker that he once was, and Isaiah Likely is already here as the future at tight end. Andrews is also set to become a free agent after the season, meaning both sides could benefit from an early split. He’d make for a nice secondary outlet for a contender,â he wrote.
Could the Ravens Be Trading Mark Andrews?
The Baltimore Ravens are expected to be active at the trade deadline and are already moving on from Odafe Oweh.Â
However, it wouldâve made sense for the Ravens not to trade someone like Andrews due to Lamar Jackson’s return. Despite that, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN believes Andrews could be available, which might indicate what’s to come.Â
âThe three-time Pro Bowler is a tried-and-true Raven, and Baltimore is still holding out faith that it can make a playoff run despite the 1-5 start. But shipping pass rusher Odafe Oweh to the Chargers surprised many around the league, and the franchise seems open to at least evaluating the future of key veterans. Andrews is making $11 million in the final year of his deal, and tight end Isaiah Likely is also set to hit free agency, probably forcing the Ravens to make some sort of action at the position eventually,â Fowler wrote.
Should the Commanders Be Buyers?
In some sense, the Washington Commanders are having a similar season to the Baltimore Ravens. Both entered the year with high expectations, but injuries have completely derailed what they’re looking to do. While it might not make sense for the 2-5 Ravens to make a move, the 3-4 Commanders could be in a different spot depending on how things go over the next few weeks.Â
Still, due to these injuries, some continue to question whether it makes sense, including The Athleticâs Nicki Jhabvala.
“The Commanders made a splash by trading for cornerback Marshon Lattimore at the deadline last year. But they were 7-2 at the time and suddenly one of the hottest teams in the league. Much has changed since then. Washington is 3-4 this season with two prime-time games before the trade deadline. The Commandersâ roster is in shambles because of injuries, and their defense is spiraling. Giving up more draft picks when theyâre deficient in many areas wouldnât make sense. And the players they might be willing to part with may not generate interest elsewhere,â she wrote.
