The Washington Commanders made a big change on offense when they decided to move on from former offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and promote former assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough into the role. Blough offered the perfect solution for the team, as they were looking to grow the offense in a new direction, while keeping familiarity within the previously established system. Under Blough, the offense is expected to take a new direction that helps develop quarterback Jayden Daniels, while also maximizing his skill set.
With a refreshed offensive system being installed, the team may choose to refresh the roster, too, as Commanders’ Senior Writer Zach Selby believes they may explore adding another top target for Jayden Daniels.
Deebo Samuel Sr.’s Future as a Washington Commander is Uncertain

GettyDeebo Samuel Sr. is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2026 following him playing out his 1-year $17.55 Million contract with the Commanders.
While Terry McLaurin is set up as the team’s number one wide receiver following the $96 Million contract extension, he signed in 2025, Selby suggests that the team could be looking for a new number two option.
The Commanders traded for wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. from the San Francisco 49ers heading into 2025. Samuel was expected to become a solid second option to McLaurin and another reliable target for Daniels. However, Washington’s injuries severely capped their offensive potential.
Despite this, “Samuel proved to be a reliable weapon, as his 72.7% catch rate was the second best of his career,” Selby wrote.
Samuel also amassed 802 total yards and six total touchdowns. However, Selby would go on to state that despite the solid production, Samuel is a 30-year-old player who is set to become a free agent this offseason.
He would conclude his piece with, “There are other receivers set to be available on the open market who could satisfy other needs for the position”.
The “other needs” Selby referred to refer to the team’s preference for getting younger and adding a weapon that can more consistently stretch the field vertically. Selby notes that Washington didn’t have a healthy player who could create explosive plays for them in the passing game.
CBS Sports lists the Washington Commanders as a ‘Potential Suitor’ For WR Alec Pierce

GettyIndianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce finished the 2025 season with 1,003 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
Washington’s desire to get a younger and more explosive target for Jayden Daniels makes Alec Pierce a perfect fit. Pierce has spent his first four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts but is set to become a free agent this offseason.
Zachary Pereles listed Pierce as number six on CBS Sports’ Top 50 Free Agents list. There, he listed the Commanders as the top landing spot for Pierce.
“Coach Dan Quinn and GM Adam Peters both expressed a desire to get younger and faster this offseason. Pierce is young (25) and fast: He’s led the NFL in yards per catch in consecutive seasons, and he became the first player since A.J. Brown in 2019 to go over 1,000 yards on at least 20 yards per catch.”
Pierce is a dominant vertical threat who has consistently won 50/50 ball matchups throughout his career. Pierce’s deep-ball ability would add a dynamic element to the Commanders’ play-action game. He also proved in 2025 that, despite his ‘go-ball’ billing, his skill set translates to being a more well-rounded receiver beyond just 20-plus yard completions.
Spotrac has Pierce’s market value at $20.2 Million in projected average salary across a four-year deal. The Commanders have the sixth most cap space in the league and could leverage a better deal to draw Pierce away from other potential options.
