The Washington Commanders have had a below-average season, something not many expected entering the year. In third place in the NFC East after being blown out by the Dallas Cowboys in Week 7, the Commanders sit at 3-4.Â
However, while it’s been a disappointing year, it’s also easy to point to injuries as the reason.Â
Depending on how the Commanders play over the next two games, taking on the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night and the Seattle Seahawks a week later, it’s very possible that they might not make a move at the trade deadline.Â
If they were to fall to 3-6, making a deal wouldn’t make sense.Â
However, USA Today’s Jack McKessy proposed a trade idea to move Michael Carter II of the New York Jets to the Commanders, citing the team’s apparent need for another cornerback.Â
âThe Commanders are a bottom-10 team in the league in average dropback EPA allowed so far this season (0.146). A large part of that has been the struggles of Washington’s cornerbacks, particularly veteran Marshon Lattimore. Rookie Trey Amos has been solid on the outside opposite Lattimore, but Mike Sainristil has struggled a bit with his return to the slot…
âThe Commanders, now below .500 after a Week 7 loss to the Cowboys, can’t keep things the way they are in the secondary. Carter is a slot-only cornerback that can take on that nickel role for Washington and let Sainristil kick back outside. That would allow the second-year player to return to a spot where he performed better over the back half of last season,â he wrote.
Jets’ Michael Carter II Will Be In Demand
Regarding the availability of Carter and what the New York Jets want to do for the Washington Commanders and other teams around the NFL that want to get involved in a potential trade, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN recently ranked him as the 12th highest player on his trade deadline board, and stated that among the Jets players who could be dealt, Carter has the highest likelihood of being moved.Â
âAmong all of the Jets players implicated in trade rumors, Carter might have the best chance of actually getting dealt. My understanding is there is interest in the slot corner.Â
âThe Jets just picked up a corner in Jarvis Brownlee Jr., who has acquitted himself well while Carter has missed time in concussion protocol. Carter is 26 years old and could give a new team steady nickel presence. One obstacle to a trade is his $4 million injury guarantee that locks in on the fifth day of the 2026 league year. The new team must consider that,â Fowler wrote.
Do the Commanders Want to Make a Trade?
The question for the Washington Commanders will come down to whether the front office wants to buy. Ralph Vachiano of Fox Sports reported that if the Commanders don’t play well over the next few weeks, they might not be inclined to make a trade.Â
He noted that, given all the injuries the Commanders have dealt with, it might be better to hold off this season and go from there.Â
âThe Commanders played without their top three receivers over the weekend, with Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel and Noah Brown all unavailable due to injury. But sitting at 3-4 with quarterback Jayden Daniels suffering a hamstring injury, the Commanders might not be inclined to make a move,â he wrote.
