There will be a time, in the coming weeks, when New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito almost inevitably gets handed his walking papers.
The Giants have 4 quarterbacks. Starter Russell Wilson, 2025 first round pick Jaxson Dart and free agent signee Jameis Winston are the others.
That means DeVito — Tommy Cutlets — has gotta go.
It also means the Washington Commanders will have a unique chance to improve their roster at the most important position by swooping DeVito up the moment he’s released.
It would serve a twofold purpose. They could bring in a player who can give them extra insight into an NFC East rival’s offensive plans for the year and, more importantly, make it so they no longer have to try and pretend like Sam Hartman is an NFL quarterback or Josh Johnson has any chance to win them games.
DeVito upped his stock to other teams in the Giants’ 34-25 win over the Buffalo Bills in their preseason opener, going 10-of-14 passing for 73 yards and 1 touchdown.
“With Wilson, Winston, and Dart in tow, it’s hard to imagine a world where DeVito makes the Giants’ 53-man roster once it’s time to get skinny,” G Men HQ’s Matt Sidney wrote on August 12. “The team will have to cut 37 players before Week 1, meaning Cutlets is likely on borrowed time. Sure, they can send him to the practice squad, but after Saturday’s performance, it’s hard to believe he won’t pique the interest of another team.”
In 2 seasons, DeVito is 3-5 as the Giants starter, including a 3-3 record in 6 starts in 2023.
Decent QB3 Play … More Important Thank You Think
If you’re rolling your eyes at the thought of spending any amount of time trying to figure out who the QB3 of your team will be, please pay attention to how the reigning Super Bowl champions treat the position.
In 2024, on the way to their second Super Bowl win in a decade, the Eagles started 3 different quarterbacks during the regular season — Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee. Each of Philadelphia’s backups won their one start, with McKee finishing off Pickett’s one start with a win then carrying the team to a win in the regular season finale.
Want more evidence how important the best team in the NFL views quarterbacks? The Eagles went out and drafted another quarterback in the sixth round in 2025 with Syracuse’s Kyle McCord — just 2 years after drafting McKee in the sixth round.
The understanding by the Eagles headed into the draft was that McKee has either upped his value on the trade market to the point the Eagles will get an offer they can’t turn down before this year’s trade deadline or, at the very least, he’ll leave in free agency when his rookie contract is up.
The Eagles are playing chess. Everybody else is playing checkers.
Hartman Looked Lost In Preseason Opener
It was alarming how bad Hartman played in a 48-18 preseason loss to the New England Patriots on August 8.
The former Wake Forest and Notre Dame quarterback went 9-of-19 passing for 64 yards and 1 interception. Their other QB3 option, Johnson, didn’t exactly set the world on fire with 15-of-22 passing for 173 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception while rushing the ball twice for negative-11 yards.
