What ended up being a wild Friday night on September 26 in college football, No. 8 Florida State was upset in double overtime, 46-38, by Virginia on the road in ACC competition. It was the Cavaliers’ first top-10 victory since beating the Seminoles in 2005.
To no surprise, those inside Scott Stadium were thrilled with the victory — so you knew what was coming next. A field storming of a kind rarely seen.
Florida State had one last chance, needing to score a touchdown and convert a two-pointer to force another overtime. But quarterback Tommy Castellanos pass to wide receiver Squirrel White fell incomplete. Seconds later, a full-blown rush of Virginia students and fans poured from the stands, flooding the field in celebration.
Social media immediately lit up with concern for White, who from television angles appeared to be trampled as the chaos unfolded.
“The Virginia field storm may be the fastest field storm I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure the FSU receiver even made it out alive,” Barstool’s Dave Portnoy wrote.
“Prayers up for FSU WR. He disappeared in a hurry,” former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray added.
Squirrel White Appears Okay After Virginia Field Storm
Florida State has yet to release an official update, but multiple social media accounts indicated that White, who had two catches for five yards, was unharmed after the storming.
Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell offered reassurance postgame. “We got everybody in the locker room,” he said.
According to ESPN, others may not have been so lucky.
“While no players or coaches were apparently injured, witnesses saw at least one fan being taken off the field on a stretcher and at least a dozen others being tended to by stadium personnel.”
The chaos happened so quickly that Virginia head coach Tony Elliott didn’t even get a chance to shake Norvell’s hand.
“I hope that nobody got injured,” Elliott said. “You don’t want to see that. I hate that I didn’t get a chance to go shake Coach Norvell’s hand, because I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for him and what he’s done with that program.”
Expect Virginia To Receive a Hefty Fine From ACC
This may go down as one of the most epic field stormings in recent memory. For a program that hadn’t posted a winning season in five years, this was a long overdue celebration.
“That’s what Scott Stadium is supposed to be like,” Elliott said. “That’s what I envisioned when I decided to take the job here. … It felt like a championship kind of game and that’s what we desire to be as a program. That’s where we want to go.”
But the celebration will come with financial consequences. The ACC this summer installed a new policy concerning field storms that includes escalating fines. Because this was Virginia’s first violation, the penalty will likely be $50,000. A second would jump to $100,000, and a third or more over a two-year period would reach $200,000.
Now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, the Cavaliers may consider $50,000 a small price to pay for a win that could propel them into the conference title race come December.
