Former UFC champ Conor McGregor may finally have a reason to return to the Octagon.
On the eve of the 4th of July, while speaking with supporters in Des Moines, Iowa, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the UFC would be holding an event at the White House on Jul. 4, 2026.
On Friday morning, the MMA community awoke to news that McGregor had already contacted Dana White about fighting on the card.
In a series of posts, McGregor threw his support behind the idea, first writing:
“Happy 4th of July, USA. Excited with President Trump announcing a UFC fight event at the White House. I would be honoured! Count me in!”
He then followed it up with a photo from his trip to the White House for St. Patrick’s Day.
McGregor then shared a screenshot of a DM exchange he had with Dana White. In response to two voice messages sent by the former champ champ, White was seen saying that he loves the idea.
The Irish star shared a screenshot of the exchange, adding:
“He loves it!”
In recent years, White has been open about the fact that he believes McGregor’s inactivity is largely due to his wealth. Time and time again, White has responded to questions about McGregor’s return by saying that the former champ has made so much money, he no longer needs to fight.
The chance to headline a UFC White House card, however, may be the kind of motivation he needs.
Looking Back at Conor McGregor’s Support of Donald Trump
Considering Conor McGregor’s longstanding support of Donald Trump, it’s no surprise that McGregor wants to fight at the White House.
Going all the way back to Trump’s first term in office McGregor has been a vocal supporter of the US President, calling him a quote, “phenomenal President”.
This then led to Trump congratulating McGregor on his UFC 246 win over Donald Cerrone:
More recently, McGregor praised Trump back in March during his aforementioned trip to the White House for St. Patrick’s Day.
Additionally, McGregor also took the chance to not only back Trump, but also slam the Irish government.
The situation led to several members of Ireland’s government criticizing the former champ champ, however, it solidified McGregor’s friendship with Trump.
In one video from the trip, the two can be seen complimenting each other, with McGregor notably praising the President’s work ethic.
Looking Back at Donald Trump’s Connection to the UFC
Fight fans frequently see Donald Trump attend U.S.-based pay-per-view events, with Dana White notably rolling out the metaphorical red carpet for the President.
On top of that, White has spoken at the Republican National Convention in support of Trump on several different occasions going all the way back to 2016.
As the UFC boss has indicated, the two have a longstanding friendship going back to the dark ages of MMA, when the UFC was struggling to find venues to host cards.
At the time, Trump allowed the UFC to hold events at his Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, with Dana White crediting him for playing a key role in helping the UFC get off the ground.
Back in 2018, during an appearance on Fox News, White was quoted as saying:
“I’m never going to say anything bad about Donald Trumpm ever. Ever, ever, ever. That guy gave us our start when nobody would talk to us.”
If White and Trump do in fact team up for a UFC White House card, the event would likely go down as one of the biggest in MMA history.
