Cowboys Address Future of Trevon Diggs Amid Injury Scare

For the trusting types among us, the situation with Cowboys star cornerback Trevon Diggs is a simple one. Diggs had some type of accident at his home and suffered a knock on the noggin that resulted in a concussion. He missed Sunday’s win over the Commanders, but will be back on the field next Sunday in Denver.

But these are conspiratorial times, and so speculation has been running hot this weekend. The fact that Diggs not only got hurt in his home but also listed his home as coming up for sale has given some hint of credence to the notion that something bigger is afoot, possibly a trade.

Adding even more smoke to that potential fire is the reality that Diggs has complained about the defensive system being run by coordinator Matt Eberflus–and that with Diggs out on Sunday, the Cowboys defense actually looked like a respectable outfit. In six games this season, Diggs has given up a passer rating of 148.7, by far the worst of his career and, in fact, more than twice the passer rating he had given up in his previous five seasons (72.7).

Cowboys Win But Trevon Diggs Question Remains

Amid the celebration of the Cowboys’ win on Sunday, the Diggs question lingered. Coach Brian Schottenheimer was asked about whether he had details on the Diggs accident that caused his concussion. He said he did not, but was also asked about whether he expects Diggs back.

“Yes,” he said. “I am a Trevon fan. I am excited to get him back and hopefully it won’t be too long.”

Schottenheimer was asked whether that would happen in Week 8.

“I don’t know,” he said. “There is a whole process where he’s got to go through the protocol and things like that. We’ll get a lot more information when we see him tomorrow.”

Trevon Diggs ‘Wanted to Be Out There’

The fact that the Cowboys defense acquitted itself well, according to Schottenheimer, just made it unfortunate that Diggs could not be part of the win. The Cowboys were dealing with several injuries before and during the game, but the team managed them and got the win.

“You guys know me, I am who I am and I don’t change. I’m disappointed for Tre,” Schottenheimer said. “He wanted to be out there playing with these guys. But I liked the plan on both sides of the ball, I thought we executed the plan on both sides of the ball. … A couple of the guys got banged up and they came back. That just shows you the toughness of that group, man.”

Cowboys Expecting a Return in Week 8

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also spoke to reporters after the game, and seemed to indicate that, yes, Diggs was missed and that he is expected back for Week 8. Diggs would be very difficult to trade, as he is in the midst of a five-year, $97 million contract that runs through 2028. The Cowboys would certainly have to eat some of his salary.

“I haven’t had a doctor’s report today at all. But I don’t think the nature of his injuries is something that would impact us for multiple weeks ahead,” Jones said.

The Cowboys have until November 4 to make a trade, if that is coming. If something is to happen with Diggs, trade-wise, it won’t be in the coming days.

“Bottom line is, I do expect him back,” Jones said.
