For the Dallas Cowboys, not all news is bad news.
While the drama surrounding Micah Parsons continues to dominate the conversation around Americaâs Team, the Cowboys appear to have lucked out when it comes to the health of their promising young running back.
According to ESPNâs Jeremy Fowler, the Cowboys are âhopefulâ that rookie Jaydon Blue will be ready for the Sept. 4 opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Blue, a fifth-round pick (149th overall) from Texas, sustained a low-ankle sprain in the preseason finale.
How Serious is Jaydon Blueâs Injury?
Blue had nine carries for 25 yards and a touchdown in Fridayâs 31-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons before leaving in the fourth quarter with an ankle sprain.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer provided an update following the game.
âI donât think itâs anything crazy,â Schottenheimer told reporters. âI donât think itâs anything too bad.â
Blue did not play in the Cowboysâ first two preseason games after sustaining an ankle bruise earlier in training camp. He also did not express much concern about his latest injury.
âI donât think itâs nothing serious,â Blue said, via Jon Machota of the Athletic. âIâve had ankles rolled plenty of times. I feel good right now.â
What Will Be Jaydon Blueâs Role as a Rookie?
Despite limited reps, Blue has impressed enough in camp to thrust himself into the mix for carries behind projected starter Javonte Williams. The Cowboys also have Miles Sanders, who like Williams, was brought in as a free agent on a one-year deal.
Blue’s agility and quickness have drawn comparisons to former NFL running back Darren Sproles.
The 5-foot-9, 196-pound Blue rushed for 1,161 yards and 11 touchdowns over three seasons at Texas, including 730 yards on 5.4 yards per carry and eight touchdowns in 2024. Blue also caught 42 passes for 368 yards and eight scores.
He was especially productive in the first round of the College Football Playoff against Clemson, when he ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries in a 38-24 win.
Last seasonâs starter, Rico Dowdle, signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers in March after rushing for 1,079 yards on 235 carries. He also had five touchdowns, including three rushing.
