If the Dallas Cowboys were looking to make a massive move at the trade deadline, they had to play much better in Week 8 against the Denver Broncos. The Cowboys were outclassed entirely on both sides of the football, with nothing going their way. They ended up losing the game 44-24, by far the worst loss of the season.Â
When speaking to reporters after the game, amid all of the talk about defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus not doing what he needs to do, head coach Brian Schottenheimer stood up for him, stating that none of the coaches on the staff have done a good enough job to suggest that only one coach should be getting the blame for how they played.Â
“When you look at it, I don’t think any of us coached or played well enough,” said Schottenheimer, per the team. “… We did not play well, we did not coach well; we didn’t coach very well. I wasn’t very good today. I don’t think [Matt Eberflus] thinks he was very good today. Klayton [Adams] doesn’t think he was very good today.
“We’ll look at it. And we’ve got an extra day this week to get ready for Arizona, and that’s what we’re gonna do.”
Cowboys’ Defense Continues to Struggle
While it’s fair to state that the Dallas Cowboysâ defense has been brutal, and some of that should be attributed to Eberflus, it’s also tough to blame him too much because of the lack of talent they have on that side of the football.Â
Had the Cowboys been a better team on that front, things would likely be different. However, a coach can only do so much when he has limited talent.Â
For others in the organization, including star quarterback Prescott, he understands that it’s just not acceptable to play this way.Â
“Yeah, I’m surprised,” said All-Pro quarterback Dak Prescott. “I’m sure that’s a good word to use. Frustrated as well â frustrating. What we’ve been doing, what we’re capable of doing, didn’t really ever get going.”Â
“Right now, our identity is up-and-down, and that’s not anything I’m proud of â not anything,” he said. “Nobody in that locker room should be proud, on any side of the ball, or coaches. Our identity right now is inconsistent, and that’s unacceptable, and we’ve got to be better. We’ve got to find a way to be consistent, whether it’s at home or on the road, regardless.
“We’re too good.”
Will the Cowboys Stand Pat or Make a Trade?
There’s not much more time for the Dallas Cowboys to figure this thing out, so that’s ultimately something that Jerry Jones and the rest of the organization will have to decide on.Â
The Cowboys were expected to make a move at the trade deadline, but if there aren’t any opportunities for them to do so, given some of the play we’ve seen over the past few weeks, this defense might only get worse moving forward. The Cowboys were expected to be rough on that side of the ball, but certainly not as bad as we’ve seen to start the year.
