The Dallas Cowboys are on closing in on the NFC East crown, and their suddenly surging defense is poised to get even better.
All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs finally opened up about his potential return from injured reserve and the knee injury/concussion he sustained while at home ahead of the Cowboys’ game Thursday against the Detroit Lions.
Dallas has won three in a row, including consecutive home victories over the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. The Cowboys (6-5-1) suddenly are 1.5 games behind the Eagles for the NFC East lead with five games left and an extremely favorable schedule down the stretch.
Diggs last played against the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 12, but his 21-day window to return from IR opened Sunday. The Cowboys have three weeks to activate Diggs from IR or place him on season-ending injured reserve.
Trevon Diggs Is ‘Really Excited’ To Rejoin the Cowboys
The Cowboys have somehow gotten off the mat without Diggs, since they were 2-3-1 when he went on IR with what he called an “at-home accident” that caused a concussion.
“It happens, it’s life,” Diggs told the Cowboys website. “Things happen.”
Yet, with four wins in six games, including a momentum-enhancing come-from-behind win over the reigning Super Bowl champs and a statement win over the three-time-reigning AFC champs, Diggs is suddenly walking into great vibes in the Cowboys locker room.
“I’m really excited,” Diggs said. “I feel like momentum is going, and I just want to make sure I go out there and continue the momentum, put out great effort, make plays and just continue to try and help this team win.”
The Cowboys have allowed just 21.6 points per game over their three-game win streak and are poised to get one of the top cover corners in the game back. Diggs is sure ready to remind opponents of that fact if they try to challenge him.
“I wouldn’t say they forget, but I know what I am,” Diggs said. “I know who I am, I know what I can do on the field. I’m going to put that out there, I’m going to show them. If they forgot, I’m going to make sure I’m going to remind them.”
Trevon Diggs Feels ‘Ready’ To Return To The Field On Sunday.
Owner/general manager Jerry Jones has already stated publicly that Diggs would be back Thursday night even before Diggs stepped foot on the practice field Sunday in Dallas’ first day of work following its Thursday afternoon win.
But practicing Sunday was confirmation to Diggs that he’ll be ready to go against one of the NFL’s top offenses, Detroit.
“I feel way better now, because you don’t know how you’re going to feel when you get out there, you know?” Diggs said. “I went out there, I was feeling good the first couple of weeks, and then it started to weigh on me a little bit.
“I started getting some swelling in my knee. Now, I don’t have any swelling in my knee, I feel good, I feel like I’m running good, I feel like my hamstring’s strong, everything is good and strong. I feel ready.”
