Cowboys Critics Are Overlooking 1 Strength in the Team

The Dallas Cowboys have a lot of excitement in their camp heading into the 2025-26 season, especially because the team has a new head coach in Brian Schottenheimer, who is expected to finally turn this franchise around and make them “America’s Team” again. Some of the positives this season are obvious, such as having franchise quarterback Dak Prescott back and healthy again after his season-ending injury last year and having guys such as CeeDee Lamb back and ready to rock.

The Cowboys are coming up on their preseason run, and then, it will be the start of the regular 2025-26 season. One of the most important pieces of any team is how many young players they have in the squad. The younger the team, the better that team is suited for the future. With that in mind, ESPN has a new tally out of the best NFL rosters under the age of 25.

Aaron Schatz of ESPN has a fresh feature out, published on Tuesday, July 29, naming the best teams in the NFL with players under the age of 25. This is one preseason tally that the Cowboys actually didn’t tank in, and that’s a beautiful thing.

The Dallas Cowboys Have Time on Their Side

Young talent is a good thing on any team. In the story, Schatz notes that “NFL teams don’t need young talent to be serious contenders, but having it helps indicate their potential for long-term success. Blue-chip players are cornerstone assets from whom teams will likely derive their biggest future value.”

Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott

GettyDak Prescott #4 and former head coach Mike McCarthy of the Dallas Cowboys talk before the game against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.

As for where the Dallas Cowboys land, it’s a respectable No. 17. Sure, it’s not No. 1, but we’ll take it. It’s up from 21 last season.

Schatz loves guard Tyler Smith and some of the team’s other young talent. He also notes how the Cowboys spend a lot on getting top offensive talent while they’re young.

“The Cowboys like to pour draft resources into the offensive line,” he states. “From left to right, you have left tackle Tyler Guyton at age 24, left guard Smith at age 24, center Cooper Beebe at age 24 and rookie right guard Tyler Booker at age 21. Also on offense, new wide receiver George Pickens qualifies as a young talent — he turns 25 next March.”

So, who’s No. 1? It’s the Texans. “For the third straight year, the Houston Texans are No. 1 on this list of teams with the most under-25 talent, which is what happens when they trade up to get the top two picks in the draft and take two players who are very young,” he explains.

Cowboys Will Age Soon, Though

But, there’s a little caution from Schatz, too, noting that “since most of the players listed above are already 24, the Cowboys might be near the bottom of this list in 2026.”

But, for now, the Cowboys are pretty high up on the tally. They’ll need the help, since they’re ranked fairly low on power rankings going into the season.

PFF’s power rankings have the Cowboys at No. 24, stating, “Dallas is banking on the potential of its new additions, but with first-time head coach Brian Schottenheimer at the helm, the strategy carries some risk. Once again, the team will likely have to lean heavily on its star quarterback-receiver duo to carry the load.” Let’s prove them wrong.
