Cowboys Cut Ties With 6-Foot-8 Vet & Sign Super Bowl Champ Days Before Preseason

The Dallas Cowboys announced a series of roster moves with the team’s preseason schedule kicking off in a matter of days on Saturday, August 9, 2025, against the Los Angeles Rams. Dallas is signing a pair of offensive tackles as the franchise deals with five different injuries along the unit.

Additionally, the Cowboys released a veteran offensive lineman to help make room for the new additions. The Cowboys signed La’el Collins, a favorite of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

Dallas also added Geron Christian who has had stints with the Washington Commanders, Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams over his eight NFL seasons.

Christian has started 25 games during his seven NFL seasons, but the majority of his 63 appearances have been in backup duty. Most recently, Christian split time with the Rams and Browns, appearing in five contests during the 2024 season.

Here’s what you need to know about the latest Cowboys roster moves.

Cowboys WR Parris Campbell Sustained a Season-Ending Injury: Report

In order to make room for Christian and Collins, Dallas placed Parris Campbell on the injured reserve list. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Campbell’s season is over before it started as the playmaker signed with the Cowboys this offseason.

Additionally, the Cowboys released tackle Matt Waletzko with an injury designation. The 6-foot-8, 305-pound offensive lineman played in 10 games for the Cowboys during his three seasons in Dallas. There is still a chance Waletzko could return to the Cowboys as a member of the team’s injured reserve.

“To make room for La’el Collins and Geron Christian, the Cowboys put WR Parris Campbell (knee) on injured reserve and waived/injured Matt Waletzko, who has been dealing with ankle injury,” ESPN’s Todd Archer detailed in an August 2, 2025, message on X. “If he clears waivers, he would revert to injured reserve.”

New Cowboys OT Geron Christian Was a 3rd-Round Pick in the 2018 NFL Draft

As for Christian, the veteran appeared in 10 games for the Chiefs during the team’s Super Bowl run in the 2022 season. Christian was selected by the Commanders in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft.

NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein gave Christian a second/third-round grade after his standout college football career at Louisville. The analyst compared Christian to Jordan Mills. It will be worth watching to see if either Collins or Christian are able to carve out a role in Dallas given the rash of recent injuries in Big D.

“Three-year starter with experience taking snaps at both tackle spots, Christian possesses good overall athleticism and foot quickness with the arm length NFL evaluators covet,” Zierlein noted in his pre-draft profile of Christian. “He needs to improve his upper body strength in order make better use of his length in pass protection and to help with redirect blocks.

“If Christian can improve his anchor and functional power, he could become an average starter, but if not, he will be a swing tackle trying to hold off competition for his job.”

The Cowboys Are Dealing With at Least 5 Injuries on the Offensive Line

Archer provided an overview of the mounting list of offensive line injuries the Cowboys are dealing with just a little more than one week after training camp began.

“The Cowboys have had four OL hurt in the last week with Tyler Guyton (knee), Rob Jones (neck), Matt Waletzko (ankle) and Hakeem Adeniji (concussion), and a fifth, left guard Tyler Smith left practice early Thursday with knee soreness,” Archer remarked in a July 31, post.
