With the team at 3-4-1 and fluctuating from appearing competent and even exciting in one week, then appearing to be in utter disarray the next, it’s understandable that there is a certain level of frustration built into the first two months of this Cowboys season. Players have admitted they’re frustrated, coaches have said they’re frustrated, the front office is frustrated and, certainly, fans are frustrated, too.
So when Jerry Jones, the team’s owner and general manager, was quoted in a recent Wall Street Journal article chatting away about chasing natural gas reserves in East Texas–with the NFL trade deadline just a week away, no less–well the frustration of the fan base on social media boiled over.
Jones was quoted in the The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, talking about a company called Comstock Reserves. “There’s $100 billion present value with gas out there,” he said. “That’s why I’m talking to you on the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with the Dallas Cowboys.”
Dak Prescott: ‘That Can Be Frustrating’
Cowboys fans who buy jerseys and tickets and invest a good deal of heart and soul into the team were less than pleased with Jones’ comments. Sure, he can have other business interests. But perhaps they can wait until November 5. The natural gas has been there for millions of years, after all. It can wait a week.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was asked about whether it was right for fans to be frustrated after practice on Thursday.
“Reading the comment, and being honest with you, I don’t know the full, full context of it. I do know a piece of it. Being a fan and you just hear that or read that, yeah, of course,” Prescott said. “Especially, right, as many fans are and do — thankful that they do — live and breathe by this team, and they feel like their jobs are putting all their effort into this. So yeah, that can definitely be frustrating.”
Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Defended by Dak Prescott
After saying that, though, Prescott also defended Jones’ legacy in business, and in that respect, the Cowboys and energy investment have gone hand-in-hand.
“But in that sense, I would just say, the guy has never really lied about who he is or what he’s trying to do,” Prescott said. “I think right there, hopefully, he was talking about in that one particular moment. Maybe in those five minutes is what he was alluding to, and having a chance at a $100 billion opportunity I think you might take five minutes as well to answer a call. So, hopefully that’s what he means, right?
“But I could see how it could be frustrating. Once again, for us as players, we can control what we can control. That doesn’t pertain to us right now.”
Cowboys Need More Than 1 Player at NFL Trade Deadline
Jones has been talking about the NFL trade deadline, of course, and the hope remains that there is a move on the board that will help shore up the team’s wayward defense, which has given up 250 points and 3,237 yards, both of which rank 31st out of 32 teams.
It will likely take a unit-wide improvement to make a dent in those numbers. Jones was asked earlier this week about whether there is one player who could fix the D.
His response: “One player away no defense? I think we’re not. I think we’re more than that away, but we’re closer to in my mind is executing better on defense.”
