On Thursday night in Detroit, Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb was in the midst of his best game of the season when he took a hit and landed on his head with just a little more than two minutes having elapsed in the third quarter. Lamb had already amassed a season-high 121 yards and had made six catches on eight targets. But when he landed, it was obvious he had symptoms of a concussion, including the well-known “fencing” posture his arms took immediately after the fall.
Lamb was helped off the field and though he appeared frustrated on the sideline, his night was over because of a concussion. Now the Cowboys can only wait and see how things unfold before Lamb can get back on the field. That can be a frustrating process, too, because though Lamb might feel ready to play again, he must be cleared by a neurologist before he can return.
The Cowboys lost the game, 44-30. They are not sure how long they will lose Lamb.
Cowboys’ Schottenheimer: CeeDee Lamb ‘Had a Good Day’
On the day after the game, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer gave an update on Lamb and how he responded in the hours following the head injury. Because the Cowboys played on Thursday, they won’t return to the field for Week 15 for 10 days, giving Lamb some extra time to recover.
“He had a good day,” Schottenheimer said on Friday in a conference call. “But he has to go through all the checks and balances of all that stuff. I do think the extra couple of days should hopefully help him.”
Team owner Jerry Jones had, earlier in the day, called Lamb’s reaction to the fall in the end zone “scary.” But after the game, Lamb himself had issued a message on Instagram, writing, “Blessed is an understatement. Love ya’ll.”

CeeDee Lamb Dealing With 3rd Concussion
Of special concern for both the Cowboys and for Lamb is that this is now his third concussion on record, going back to his days coming out of Oklahoma. That was six years ago, but Lamb did miss a game against Baylor with “concussion symptoms” in early November of 2019, and also missed time in the NFL back in November 2021 with a concussion.
Three concussions, even spread out over so long a time, are a worry for Lamb and could cause his recovery time to stretch longer than it would for a player who is suffering his first concussion. There’s also a fear that Lamb might continue having concussion problems going forward.
Cowboys May Lean on George Pickens
As for the Cowboys, losing Lamb would be especially tough. Wide receiver George Pickens has shown himself to be a No. 1-caliber receiver throughout this season, with a team-high 1,179 yards and 78 catches this season, but Pickens came under fire in the loss to the Lions because he appeared to be disengaged for much of the game and jogged his way through a route on a key third-down play in which Dak Prescott threw it his way.
Jones said on Friday that while Pickens was not at his best, he is not ready to criticize his effort.
“He didn’t have the game that he’s been having. But effort? I would be very careful going there with him,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “This guy, he’s explosive with his temperament, and I say that in a positive way. I don’t think so much it was effort, but I don’t necessarily have a good explanation as to why he didn’t show up more, especially, against the backdrop that they were limited in their secondary.”
