Cowboys Injured Star Sends 3-Word Message on Playing Week 1

In the end, what the Dallas Cowboys really need to know, after an offseason of back-and-forth and controversy, is whether cornerback Trevon Diggs will be on the field when the season opens on September 4 against the defending-champion Eagles.

As of now, Diggs is a question mark. He followed up a 2023 season in which he missed 15 games because of an ACL tear with a 2024 season in which he played just 11 games and missed the final four games with a new knee injury that required surgery in January.

Diggs was as effective as ever when he played last year–quarterbacks had a rating of 85.3 when throwing his way–but his inability to stay on the field is now a problem for a player who is on a five-year, $97 million contract with the team. He took a $500,000 reduction, though, when he chose to rehab in Florida after surgery rather than in Texas.

Asked on Friday about whether he would suit up for Week 1, Diggs said, via ESPN: “Maybe, maybe not.”

Cowboys Badly Need Depth

Certainly, the Cowboys could use Diggs. They’re thin at corner now, with DaRon Bland in place and former Bills first-round pick Kaiir Elam across from him. Elam has had a good camp, but the Cowboys were not expecting to go in with him as the starter.

The Cowboys’ depth is already stretched by the knee injury for third-round pick Shavon Revel and second-year corner Caelan Carson, who missed almost all of camp with a knee injury, too.

If Diggs is still hurt, he would likely start on the PUP list, which would keep him out for at least the first four weeks of the season. In the end, even if the Cowboys have some confidence that Diggs will be ready to start the year, they will surely be scouring the waiver wire in the coming days to fill out that position room.

Trevon Diggs Eager to Play

Diggs said there is no doubt he wants to get back on the field, the sooner the better.

“Oh, I’m very hungry,” he said. “I’m itching to get back out on the field. Like, I can’t wait.”

And will it be his decision, or the Cowboys’ call on whether he is ready for Week 1 or headed to the PUP? “I think it’s a mutual decision. If they see something that I don’t see or if I feel something that they don’t know that I feel, it’s going to be that. It’s just about communicating and going out there and seeing what I can do.”
