Cowboys’ Jerry Jones: Nothing ‘Untouchable’ in Trade Talks

The Cowboys are 2-3-1 through six games, a frustrating mix of exceptional offensive production combined with defensive ineptitude that has given fans a team capable of scoring with anyone, and just as equally capable of being outscored by anyone. While the staff has stood behind embattled defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, the fact is, he either needs to change his system or the team needs an upgrade in talent.

And given the fact that this team ranked No. 31 in points allowed in 2024, and No. 28 in yards allowed, under former defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, it’s far more likely that this is a problem of personnel, not of strategy.

Maybe Eberflus is not thriving in the job, but the Cowboys need better players.  With the trade deadline approaching, and with Dallas sitting on two first-round picks from the Packers thanks to the Micah Parsons trade, the Cowboys are in position to make a major deal ahead of the NFL’s November 4 trade deadline.

Cowboys 2 Picks From Packers Trade Not ‘Untouchable’

Now, whether there is any one piece that could be acquired in a trade that would fix the defense as it stands is doubtful. It’s also doubtful that there will be a piece on offer in a trade that is worth sacrificing a first-round pick.

But if there is, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he would pull the trigger. The picks from the Packers, first-rounders in 2026 and 2027, are on offer.

“There’s nothing untouchable,” Jones said on Tuesday morning on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.

“If we can improve our team and it makes sense for what we give up in the future, all of it’s there. You’re right in one sense, we have major, major, major resources that we wouldn’t have had, had we not made that trade.”

Jerry Jones: Cowboys’ ‘Eyes Really Opened’ to Trade Possibilities

Jones said the Cowboys are, indeed, on the lookout for possible upgrades to the defense via trade. In fact, he said he’d be open to offensive additions if they presented themselves, too.

“No question about it, I promise you, yours truly or anybody associated with the Cowboys has got our eyes really opened to ways we can help this defense and certainly don’t want to preclude anything on offense, either,” Jones said.

“To answer your question, there’s nothing untouchable in our resources to help our team. And there’s no way that I’m at a point right now to where I would not do something because of where we are into the season, six games. I would go as early as I would if we were talking three games back.”

NFL Trade Block Might Not Feature Long-Term Stars

There could be some good defensive players on the trade block in the next three weeks, including pass-rushers Trey Hendrickson of the Bengals, Arden Key of the Titans and Jaelan Phillips of the Dolphins. The Cowboys need help in the secondary and safety Geno Stone of the Bengals could be useful there.

Again, when contract situations are factored in–all of the above players are pending free agents–it’s not likely that there’s a player worthy of a first-round pick in a trade. But if one comes available, the Cowboys say they’ll be in.
