The Dallas Cowboys made a series of roster moves as the team looks to address the mounting injury concerns. After a string of offensive line injuries, Dallas is now dealing with health concerns in the secondary.
Cornerback Caelen Carson is in danger of missing as much as six weeks with a knee injury. The news comes as Tyler Guyton and Robert Jones are also sidelined with injuries.
Dallas released wide receiver Kelvin Harmon in order to create room to sign veteran corner Christian Matthew. It remains to be seen if additional roster moves are on the way.
“Cowboys CB Caelen Carson suffered a hyperextended knee Sunday that will keep him out 4-6 weeks, according to sources,” ESPN’s Todd Archer detailed in a July 29, 2025, message on X.
“Thins out a position that’s been w/o Trevon Diggs, Shavon Revel, Josh Butler, who are on PUP/NFI, and DaRon Bland until Monday. Hence Christian Matthew addition.”
Let’s dive into the Cowboys latest roster moves.
New Cowboys CB Christian Matthew Posted a 41 1/2 Inch Vertical
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound corner was a seventh-round draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2022 NFL draft. Matthew impressed at his Valdosta State pro day posting a 41 1/2-inch vertical leap and 10-foot-7 broad jump. Here is how NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein described Matthew heading into the 2022 NFL draft.
“Matthew is a height, weight, speed prospect whose allure will primarily be based on his rare blend of size and explosive athletic testing,” Zierlein wrote in his pre-draft profile on Matthew.
“As a 25-year-old rookie, Matthew has a somewhat limited upside but it’s difficult to find corner prospects with his measurables and outstanding length. His 15 pass breakups in 2021 could give rise to hope that he’s finally finding his footing as a prospect.”
Christian Matthew Last Played in an NFL Game in 2023
In addition to the Cardinals, Matthew also played for the Chicago Bears prior to joining the Cowboys. Matthew last played in an NFL game in 2023 appearing in six games for the Cardinals and Bears.
New Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus reflected on the recent string of injuries just one week into training camp.
“I always look at that as opportunity first, because you get a chance for the guys that are competing to step up and move into the ones or twos, which they wouldn’t normally be if the starters are there,” Eberflus told reporters, per DallasCowboys.com’s Tommy Yarrish.
Could the Cowboys Look to Sign Tyron Smith?
It will be interesting to see if the Cowboys also address the offensive line woes with Guyton and Jones battling injuries. USA Today’s K.D. Drummond pondered whether the Cowboys could explore attempting to bring Tyron Smith out of his brief retirement.
“Flashing back to March, the club re-signing their future Hall of Famer in order to give him his proper goodbye, allowing Tyron Smith to retire as a Dallas Cowboy,” Drummond wrote in a July 28, story titled, “Top free agent options at tackle after Cowboys avoid season-ending injury to LT Guyton.” “They might want to pick up the phone and see if watching people report to training camp has stirred some juices up.
“It’s a long shot, but Smith started 10 games last year, and his 23 combined starts over his last two years is technically the most he’s seen in a stretch since 2018-2019.”
