After a prolonged contract negotiation battle, the Dallas Cowboys traded four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers shortly before the start of the season. The trade had the feeling of a personal vendetta by Cowboys owner and de facto general manager Jerry Jones at the time.
And since then, that feeling has only been confirmed as Jones has taken a number of gratuitous shots at Parson, including quipping in a radio interview that the Cowboys “didnât exactly win the Super Bowl” in the four years Parsons played in Dallas.
Jones also broke with the usual practice of presenting tribute videos for returning star players. There will be no tribute for Parsons when he returns to AT&T Stadium for the Packers Sunday Night Football clash with the Cowboys on September 28.
One, Final Slight Directed at Parsons
But there was final, rather petty slight directed at Parsons that could come back to haunt the Cowboys on Sunday night.
Parsons, in the final season of a four-year, $186 million contract with the Cowboys, purchased a field-level luxury suite at AT&T Stadium prior to the season â and the trade â for the use of his family and friends to come watch him play for the Cowboys.
On Sunday, Parsons family and friends will be watching Parsons play against the Cowboys from that same suite.
How did that happen? After he was traded, Parsons â clearly believing he had no further use for the suite â reportedly requested that the Cowboys refund the money he paid for the it. The exact amount that Parsons paid for the suite has not been revealed, but AT&T Stadium suites can go for up to $20,000 per game.
Presumably Parsons received a discount for purchasing the suite for the entire season in advance, as well as for being, at the time, a Cowboys employee. But it appears that the 2021 first-round draft pick out of Penn State would have shelled out between $50,000 and $100,000, at least, for the suite.
Cowboys Tell Parsons, ‘No Refunds’
However, when Parsons asked for his money back on the grounds that, through no fault of his own, he was no longer a Dallas player, the Cowboys said no dice.
“No refunds,” Parsons told ESPN.com, when asked about the suite situation.
But then, the two-time first-team All-Pro revealed how he planned to use the Cowboys “no refunds” policy, if indeed it is a policy, against his former team.
“The suite’s going to be packed out for sure,” Parsons told ESPN.com. “Trust me, I’ve got a big suite.”
Now, on Sunday, the Cowboys face the prospect of an entire “big suite” full of Packers fans cheering for Parsons when he makes his first trip back to Dallas to face his former team.
“It seems odd that Dallas wouldnât refund Parsonsâ suite, assuming he tried to cancel it after the trade. It also means the Cowboys deserve criticism for allowing this to happen,” wrote SI.com Cowboys correspondent Randy Gurzi on Sunday morning. “Jerry Jones has always been about making his money, but this time, their team could be humiliated all for the sake of avoiding refunds.”
