Cowboys Linked to Saints Veteran Amid Defensive Issues

With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the Dallas Cowboys are one of the more interesting teams in the NFL to watch in any blockbuster deal. After moving on from Micah Parsons, the Cowboys have more than enough to land a decent player at this year’s deadline.

The question for the Cowboys will be centered around who they want to trade for, as there are expected to be multiple teams selling due to poor play. When examining potential trade options, The Athletic’s Jon Machota had an intriguing one, linking the Cowboys to New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis, a significant area of need for Dallas entering the deadline.

“Davis is ranked 15th among linebackers by PFF. The Cowboys don’t have a linebacker in the top 50. DeMarvion Overshown is on track to return after Dallas’ Week 10 bye.

“As long as he is healthy, Overshown will instantly upgrade the defense. But he needs help. Davis, 36, is tied for eighth in the NFL in tackles and has five tackles for loss and a forced fumble. The Saints are 1-6 and Davis will become a free agent after the season. The cost shouldn’t be significant,” he wrote.

The Cowboys Have Several Issues on Defense

It’s tough to say the Dallas Cowboys only have one issue on the defensive side of the football, but the linebacker play certainly hasn’t been up to par.

Factor that in with their inability to stop the run and giving up far too many points to below-average offenses, and it’s obvious that a player like Davis would be a significant upgrade.

According to Machota, the Cowboys wouldn’t have much of a reason not to go out and make a move, given their ability to trade multiple first-round picks and their salary cap space.

“The Cowboys certainly have the ammunition after gaining two first-round picks in the Parsons trade. They also have plenty of salary-cap space, roughly $30 million, according to Over The Cap.”

From the sound of things, the Dallas Cowboys want to go out and make a move. According to Machota, Stephen Jones, the Cowboys VP, stated that he’s taking every single day seriously and looking at what he can do to improve the roster.

“We’re never not serious every day about making our team better,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said in October. “The trade deadline is the trade deadline. Until that point, you’re always looking for ways to improve yourself and you can do that up until the trade deadline. We’re always very serious about looking at any way to make our team better.”

Would Demario Davis Help the Cowboys?

While Davis could fit well, at 36 years old, the Cowboys have no reason to trade significant draft capital to acquire him.

However, he does have 33 tackles on the season and had 74 in 2023.

“We’ll always look at everything,” Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said. “You know that. I think Jerry and Stephen and (vice president of player personnel Will McClay), I mean, they’re always open for business. You know, this time of year you kind of let those guys focus on it because we’re so busy game planning and all that stuff.”

With the trade deadline on Nov. 4, the Cowboys have some critical moves to make.
