Cowboys’ Matt Eberflus Has Blunt Message for Bears Before Week 3 Game

There could be some emotions for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus will face his former team, with many believing that he has some hard feelings about the organization. While Eberflus and the Bears never found much success, it’s tough to blame him in some sense. For the better part of the past few decades, it isn’t exactly like the Bears have been a great team.

However, when speaking with ESPN’s Todd Archer, Eberflus stated that he isn’t worried about going there and trying to seek revenge. Instead, he’s focused on the Cowboys winning games and his defense playing at the level they’re expected to. Eberflus decided to take the defensive coordinator job under head coach Brian Schottenheimer this past offseason.

“Yeah, there’s always hard moments in coaching,” Eberflus said. “You’re always disappointed when you lose because you put so much into it, the players put so much into it. You’re most disappointed for the players. Once that settles in, then you work to the next day. The sun comes up and you move forward. You learn and you grow, and you keep going. That’s what true grit is. That’s what we’re all about.”

Matt Eberflus and the Cowboys’ Defense Need to Improve

Eberflus has been around this game for a long time, and while his stint with the Chicago Bears as a head coach didn’t go as planned, he’s still respected around the league.

The Dallas Cowboys defense hasn’t played well under him so far, but it’s only been two games. The hope is that he’ll eventually figure things out, which some expect to be the case.

When speaking to ESPN as well, Schottenheimer said hiring him was an easy choice, in fact. He wasn’t worried about some of his past struggles with the Bears, but was focused on him having the type of attitude that he wanted around the guys on the defensive side of the football.

“When I talked to him — and this is literally what happened — we’re just creatures of habit, if something doesn’t go your way, whether it’s me in Seattle or him in Chicago, whatever it is, and you think, ‘Maybe I’ll take a little time,’” Schottenheimer said. “Now, I will say, he loves to play golf. But the minute I talked to him on the phone, the first five minutes, I was like, ‘Yeah, this dude is all-in.’

“That’s what you want. You want someone who is hungry, and no one is more motivated to continue to be an elite coach than Matt Eberflus. I think he’s going to do that for us and this defense moving forward.”

Matt Eberflus Wanted to Bounce Back After Bears Stint

Eberflus also could’ve decided to hang things up and go on with his career, or explore other opportunities in football, not in the NFL. Instead of becoming a college head coach or doing other things, he decided to become a coach for the most historic franchise in NFL history, the Dallas Cowboys.

He admitted that he just wanted to get back to work and coach guys that he loves, which seems to be the case right now in Dallas.

“I love coaching players. I love working with the players,” Eberflus said. “And that’s something that I’ve always loved to do, and I wanted to get back in.”

Hopefully, his defense will help him out on Sunday.
