Cowboys’ Micah Parsons Drops Frustrating News on Contract Situation

Sure, at this point, we can say this is just how the Cowboys do business. They wait. They drag their feet. They show no urgency to make a move on signing their star players, even ones who have been as loyal and tight with owner Jerry Jones as Micah Parsons has. In the end, Jones runs a business, and treats his players that way.

Parsons is in the fifth year of his rookie deal, slated to make $24 million. As, arguably, the top pass-rusher in the game, he deserves more.

The expectation is still that the Cowboys will, eventually, sign Parsons to a new contract, probably the richest contract ever given to a defensive player, a title currently held by Steelers star TJ Watt, who, on a per-year basis, is slated to get $41 million, with $123 million over three seasons.

But the question is, why do the Cowboys feel the compulsion to do things this way, to drag out a process for which everyone already knows the ending? They did it last season with quarterback Dak Prescott, who was signed on the day of the season opener, and with receiver CeeDee Lamb, who was signed in late August.

It is frustrating to fans, it damages team chemistry, and Parsons, for one, is speaking openly about it.

Cowboys Have Not Made ‘Much Movement’

Parsons stopped and spoke with the media, surprisingly, for about 15 minutes on Tuesday as the Cowboys begin their 2025 training camp. He showed up–he is not an official holdout–though he did not do much.

What is bizarre is that Parsons reported that there has been little contact from Jones about his deal.

“I mean, honest, there’s not really much movement, man,” Parsons said. “You know, I want to be here. I’ve always said I want to be here. But at the end of the day, they sign the checks like always, and let’s see if they want me to be here at the end of the day.”

That is pretty standoffish language from Parsons, who came into the contract process complimentary of Jones but has since soured on their relationship.

Parsons, like everyone, wonders why Jones (and son Stephen Jones) can’t just come to the table and simply hammer out a deal.

“I think they got their own timeline on when they want to get things done,” Parsons said. “At any given time they can get things done, so I don’t think that helps. I just think I’m doing this for myself and my teammates.”

Micah Parsons Wonders if Joneses ‘Want Me Here’

For the first time, too, Parsons talked openly about leaving the Cowboys. He does not want to do so, but the Joneses are not exactly making him feel welcome, after he had been nothing but a good soldier for the team throughout his four-year career, which includes four Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pros.

Jerry Jones noted earlier this week that the Cowboys have trepidation about committing to Parsons because he was injured for four games last season–the only four games of his career he has missed.

“If they don’t want me here, they don’t want me here,” Parsons said. “I go about my business. I understand the nature of the business. Like I said, as long as I’m here and under contract, I’m going to do what I have to do to perform at the highest level. But if this is the end, this is the end, you know? The same way that Jones, Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones and the other Jerry Jones take care of their family, that’s the same way I need to take care of my own family.”
